A former 27th-round pick by the Cardinals in 2017, Whitley, 30, is looking to resurrect his career after he was released by the Braves last March. Given how the Rays typically go through a number of bullpen arms over the course of a season, Whitley is potentially in a good spot to eventually make it back to the major leagues. He’ll have to shake off the rust after a year-long layoff, though.

Whitley latched on with the Braves last July shortly after being cut loose by the Cardinals. The 29-year-old righty made a pair of scoreless relief appearances this spring in Grapefruit League action. It’s possible he’s been jettisoned to pursue an opportunity elsewhere since he was unlikely to make Atlanta’s season-opening roster.

It took Whitley only a few days to find a new opportunity after being released by the Cardinals as he’ll head to Atlanta as extra organizational relief depth. The 28-year-old righty hasn’t pitched in the big leagues this season, but has made 43 relief appearances in the majors since 2020.

Whitley was jettisoned from St. Louis’ 40-man roster last November after making 43 relief appearances for the Cardinals over a three-year period dating back to 2020. The 28-year-old righty has struggled this season in 32 relief appearances for Triple-A Memphis and will get a chance to pursue a new opportunity on the open market.

The 27-year-old hurler appeared in 14 games for the Cardinals at the big league level in 2022, registering a 5.68 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 12/9 K/BB ratio across 12 2/3 innings. He’ll continue to function as additional bullpen depth for the Cardinals in the minors.

Whitley has really struggled of late, particularly with his control. He’ll try to get sorted out in the minors.

Whitley had a 4.50 ERA in his 11 appearances with St. Louis earlier in this season. He will operate in the middle innings.

Whitley has posted a 4.50 ERA and 10/6 K/BB ratio across 10 innings of work this year with St. Louis. Jake Walsh has been called up from Memphis on Wednesday in a corresponding 26-man roster move.

Whitley has been summoned to take Andrew Miller’s spot in the Cardinals’ bullpen. The 26-year-old righty has pitched to a bloated 6.10 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 8/7 K/BB ratio across 10 1/3 innings (12 appearances) at the major-league level this season.

Whitley landed on the injured list at the end of May with mild back spasms, but it took him a lot longer than anticipated to return. The right-hander has posted a 6.10 ERA through 10 1/3 innings at the big league level this season.
