Herget was only up for one game. He heads back to the minors with the Mets promoting top pitching prospect Jonah Tong for his MLB debut against the Marlins on Friday.

Herget will be a middle-inning option in his latest stint with the Mets. A corresponding move should be announced shortly.

Herget, who was just called up Saturday, did a great job last night in throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in the Mets’ comeback victory, but now he’s gone for a fresh arm. That’s the life of a fringe reliever.

Herget receives the call to join New York’s bullpen mix ahead of Saturday’s contest against the Reds. The 34-year-old journeyman reliever has made two relief appearances this season in the majors between the Mets and Atlanta.

Herget passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment earlier this week when Atlanta claimed lefty Joey Wentz from Minnesota. The 34-year-old journeyman has made a pair of relief appearances this season in the big leagues between the Mets and Braves.

Herget was booted from the 40-man roster to make room for Joey Wentz after Wentz was claimed off waivers from Minnesota. Herget could see interest on the waiver wire for those in need of bullpen arms, but it’s just as likely he heads back to Triple-A after going unclaimed.

Herget is being replaced on the active roster by Daysbel Hernandez, with Hernandez coming off the injured list in the corresponding transaction. Herget could be back at some point this summer.

The Braves had to cover seven innings with their bullpen on Friday night after Bryce Elder’s two-inning disaster start, so Herget will join the bullpen on Saturday to provide a fresh arm that’s capable of working multiple innings. He can be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Herget will report to Triple-A Gwinnett as extra organizational relief depth for Atlanta. The 34-year-old journeyman has made 25 relief appearances in the big leagues dating back to 2022. He got into only one contest earlier this season for New York.

The Mets needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster to acquire José Castillo from the Diamondbacks on Thursday and apparently Herget was the odd man out this time around. The 34-year-old right-hander has spent the majority of the 2025 season at Triple-A Syracuse where he has registered a solid 2.87 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and a 13/7 K/BB ratio over 15 2/3 innings. He could generate some interest on waivers from teams desperate for quality bullpen depth.
