Kelby Tomlinson has announced his retirement from baseball.
Tomlinson, 31, hadn’t played in the majors since 2018. He batted .265/.331/.332 over parts of four big league seasons.

  • COL 2nd Baseman #37
    Rockies released INF/OF Kelby Tomlinson.
Tomlinson was signed to a minor league contract without an invite to spring training in January after spending last year in the Diamondbacks and Mariners’ organization. He hit just .247 in his time with those clubs -- all in Triple-A -- and with no minor-league season (likely) coming, he doesn’t really fit as organizational depth.

  • COL 2nd Baseman #37
Rockies signed INF/OF Kelby Tomlinson to a minor league contract.
Tomlinson spent last year at the Triple-A level with the Diamondbacks and Mariners’ organizations, respectively, and hit just .247 at those levels. A former utility-player for the Giants, he’s nothing more than organizational depth at this point in his career.
  • COL 2nd Baseman #37
Mariners signed INF/OF Kelby Tomlinson to a minor league contract.
Tomlinson hit only .218/.320/.276 at Triple-A Reno before being released last month. He’ll give the M’s some utility depth.
  • COL 2nd Baseman #37
    Diamondbacks released INF/OF Kelby Tomlinson.
Tomlinson was hitting just .218/.320/.276 at Triple-A Reno. He’ll look for another minor league gig elsewhere.
  • COL 2nd Baseman #37
Diamondbacks signed INF/OF Kelby Tomlinson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Tomlinson posted an ugly .207/.265/.264 batting line in 152 plate appearances this past season for the Giants. He can play all over the field defensively, but the 28-year-old seems doubtful to make a big impact in Arizona.
  • COL 2nd Baseman #37
Kelby Tomlinson has elected free agency.
Tomlinson lost his spot on the Giants’ 40-man roster and will now seek employment elsewhere. He’s a career .265/.331/.332 hitter in the majors but does offer some versatility.
  • FA Shortstop #35
Brandon Crawford is out of the Giants’ starting lineup on Tuesday night against the Padres.
This looks to be a routine day of rest for Crawford, who went 2-for-4 with a solo homer on Monday night in San Diego. Kelby Tomlinson will start at shortstop and bat leadoff Tuesday versus left-hander Joey Lucchesi.
  • SEA Outfield #4
Denard Span has been scratched from the Giants’ starting lineup Wednesday versus the Padres.
No word yet on the reason for the sudden absence. Gregor Blanco is now starting in center field and batting leadoff against Padres right-hander James Shields. Kelby Tomlinson will get a rate start in left field.
  • FA 3rd Baseman #9
Matt Duffy was pulled from Monday’s game against the Braves after taking a pitch off his left wrist.
Duffy stayed in to run initially following a meeting with the Giants’ trainer, but Kelby Tomlinson took over at third base when the inning turned. There should be an update from the Giants after the game. Duffy finished 0-for-2 with the HBP on Monday in Atlanta.
