Julio Mateo (sore right elbow) looked very good in yesterday’s simulated game, and is very close to returning to action.
Provided he does not suffer a setback, Mateo, who has been out of action since July 29th, could be activated off the disabled list as early as the weekend.

Julio Mateo (elbow tendinitis) threw yesterday in the bullpen and will do so again tomorrow.

Julio Mateo (elbow tendinitis) threw from flat ground for five minutes before yesterday’s game.
If he feels fine Mateo could throw again today. He remains out of action indefinitely, but could figure into the Mariners’ closer plans for next season.

It won’t happen now, but if Freddy Garcia does get removed from the Seattle rotation, it could be either Julio Mateo or Rafael Soriano who replaces him.
Soriano is the one who projects as a starter for the long term, but since Mateo is more stretched out right now, he could be the choice. AL-only leaguers with an open roster spot should consider picking him up and rooting for another poor outing by Garcia.

He should be fine for tonight.

Julio Mateo (elbow) will be activated off the disabled list before tonight’s game against the Angels.
He has been sidelined since July 29th and will be eased back into action. Mateo will likely pitch in long relief. If he hadn’t been injured when Eddie Guardado was lost for the season, he might have have had a chance to close instead of J.J. Putz.
