Manzanillo

Manzanillo followed up an impressive spring by allowing 20 runs -- 15 earned -- in 10 2/3 innings for the Reds.

Back where he started. Manzanillo was signed by Boston way back in 1983 and spent nine years in the system, appearing in just one game in the majors. He’ll be a longshot to win a spot in the Red Sox pen, but if he does, he’ll make $350,000.

Manzanillo could have chosen to become a free agent.

Manzanillo had allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings. If he wants to keep trying, the Red Sox likely will give him a spot on Pawtucket’s roster.

Manzanillo was reassigned to minor league camp on Sunday.

The Marlins are looking for bullpen depth in any form. Manzanillo, 36, appeared in nine games for Cincinnati last season, going 0-2 with a 12.66 ERA in 10 2/3 innings.

Manzanillo had a 5.25 ERA in 12 innings since being signed to a minor league deal last month. There’s little reason for optimism that this is going to work out well.

No word yet on why Armando Benitez wasn’t used. Maybe a 58-minute rain delay in the bottom of the eighth had something to do with it.

With Guillermo Mota in town, Manzanillo can be dropped in fantasy leagues. Mota should get the save opps until Armando Benitez returns.
