Rangers signed C Jose Herrera to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Herrera fortifies Texas’ organizational catching depth after hitting .187/.285/.259 with two homers and 17 RBI in 204 plate appearances over 57 games this past season with the Diamondbacks. The 28-year-old backstop spent the first 11 seasons of his career with Arizona. He’ll serve as an emergency option for the Rangers next season behind Danny Jansen and Kyle Higashioka.

Diamondbacks C Jose Herrera elected free agency.
The 28-year-old backstop saw plenty of playing time with the Diamondbacks due to Gabriel Moreno missing significant time with a hand injury but wound up hitting just .187/.285/.259 with two homers and 17 RBI in his 204 plate appearances. He’ll assuredly latch on someplace on a minor league pact and can continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Jose Herrera went 1-for-3 with a two-run double on Sunday, helping to lead the Diamondbacks to a 5-1 victory over the Angels.
Herrera transformed a 2-1 lead into a 4-1 advantage for the Diamondbacks with a two-out, two-run double off of Jose Soriano in the fourth inning that changed the complexion of the game. That would be his only hit in three at-bats on the afternoon, but it played a critical role in the victory. For the season, the 28-year-old backstop is now hitting .197/.302/.268 with one homer and 13 RBI in 159 plate appearances.

Diamondbacks signed C James McCann to a one-year contract.
McCann provides Arizona with a more experienced veteran backup while Gabriel Moreno is on the injured list recovering from a fractured finger. The 35-year-old veteran got into 65 games last year for the Orioles in a backup role and has appeared in 917 big-league contests since 2014. He’ll split the catching duties for the Diamondbacks with Jose Herrera for the next couple weeks.

Gabriel Moreno (hand) is not in the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Blue Jays.
Moreno was scratched Tuesday from the lineup because of soreness in his right hand, and it’ll keep him out Wednesday. Jose Herrera is in the lineup behind the plate and will hit ninth. Moreno remains day-to-day.

Gabriel Moreno was a late scratch from Tuesday’s lineup against the Blue Jays due to right hand soreness.
Moreno has been battling a right hand issue since taking a wild pitch off it back on June 6. It sounds like a precautionary decision to keep him on the bench. Jose Herrera will take over behind the plate during Tuesday’s series opener in Toronto. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now.

Gabriel Moreno (hand) remains out of the lineup for Monday’s contest against the Mariners.
Moreno will sit out his third straight contest after taking a wild pitch off his right hand during Friday’s showdown against the Reds. The 25-year-old backstop remains day-to-day for now. It’s at least a positive sign that he hasn’t been placed on the injured list. It’ll be Jose Herrera handling the catching duties on Monday night in his absence.

Gabriel Moreno (hand) remains out of the lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Reds.
Moreno is getting some extra time off to rest and recover after suffering a right hand contusion during Friday’s contest. It’s an encouraging sign heading into next week that Arizona has removed emergency catcher Aramis Garcia from the active roster already. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. It’ll be Jose Herrera handling the catching duties on Sunday afternoon in his place.
