Braves signed OF José Azocar to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Things have been trending in the wrong direction for Azocar, who had 216 plate appearances in the majors as a rookie in 2022, but just 102, 79 and 21 the last three seasons. Overall, he’s hit .244/.290/.319 in 228 games, two of which actually came with the Braves last summer in between stints in the Mets organization. He seems destined to be Triple-A insurance for Atlanta.

Juan Soto is not in the starting lineup against the Pirates.
Soto has started the first 43 games of the season, but the Mets will give the star slugger a Wednesday off in the finale against Pittsburgh ahead of Thursday’s day off for the Mets. Jose Azocar will be the right fielder while Soto rests.

Brandon Nimmo is absent from Tuesday’s lineup due to illness.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters Nimmo is getting an IV and might be available off the bench for Tuesday’s showdown at Citi Field. The 32-year-old authored the performance of a lifetime during Monday’s blowout victory, launching two homers and collecting nine RBI as part of a four-hit effort. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. It’ll be José Azócar in left field on Tuesday night.

Azocar is up with the Mets placing Jose Siri on the injured list with a tibia fracture. Azocar will be a fourth outfielder with the Mets who likely won’t see a ton of playing time.
