Weems, 32, was released by the Braves last month after posting a 5.09 ERA in 17 2/3 innings of relief work for Triple-A Gwinnett. He has a 5.26 ERA in 140 relief appearances over five big-league seasons.

The latest cuts reduce Atlanta’s spring training roster to 50 players. Shreve and Weems were in camp as non-roster invitees battling for spots in the club’s season-opening bullpen. They’ll open the year back at Triple-A Gwinnett as emergency relief depth.

Weems, 32, joins on with Atlanta after spending the 2024 season with the Nationals. The southpaw will compete for one of the final spots in the Atlanta bullpen, but more likely profiles as roster depth.

The 31-year-old hurler was designated for assignment earlier in the week, but he passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as extra bullpen depth for the Nats at the Triple-A level. Weems holds a 6.70 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and a 35/24 K/BB ratio over 41 2/3 innings in 41 appearances at the big-league level this season.

Weems is getting the boot for Orlando Ribalta, with Ribalta having his contract selected in the corresponding transaction. Weems was awful in 2024, and the 31-year-old just came off the injured list after missing two weeks with shin splints. There might not be much of a market here.

Weems started the year in the minors, but had a 6.59 ERA in 40 games for Washington this year. He was mostly used in middle relief. Weems will be on the shelf for at least the next two weeks with shin splints.

Weems walked a pair of batters but came out of the tenth inning with the game still tied. The Nationals would add two runs in the top of the 11th before he returned to pitch the bottom of the frame. Weems struck out two to end it, earning the win and securing the victory for Washington.

Weems has tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings over a pair of relief appearances this season for the Nationals and will available in relief for Tuesday’s series opener against the Diamondbacks. He figures to operate in middle relief situations.

Weems gives the Nationals some extra relief depth for Saturday’s twin bill and will head back to Triple-A Rochester afterwards.
