According to Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports, the Orioles have maintained interest in bringing back free agent southpaw John Means.
The 31-year-old hurler underwent his second Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in June and will miss most, if not all, of the 2025 season while recovering. Wherever he ultimately does sign, expect it to be a two-year pact so the team can take advantage of a full and healthy season from him.

Mass Live’s Chris Cotillo reported that “the Red Sox have had some talks with John Means.”
The free agent left-handed pitcher underwent Tommy John surgery in June of this past season. It was his second elbow surgery in the last three years and will likely keep Means out for all of 2025. However, the 31-year-old had a 2.64 ERA in his eight starts for the Orioles over the last two years in between his injuries, so the Red Sox may sign him to a two-year contract, as they did with Michael Fulmer and Liam Hendriks, and then let him rehab for one season in the hopes of getting at least one fully healthy season out of him in 2026.

Orioles transferred LHP John Means from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list.
Means will miss the rest of the season and much of next year after undergoing Tommy John surgery earlier this month.

John Means underwent his second Tommy John surgery on Monday.
This wasn’t the internal brace procedure, so if Means, who will be a free agent this winter, does return next year, it won’t be until the end of the season. Means totaled just 40 1/3 innings rehabbing in the minors and 44 1/3 major league innings in between his surgeries. He had a 2.64 ERA in his eight starts for the Orioles between this year and last.

Orioles’ general manager Mike Elias told reporters on Friday that left-hander John Means will undergo season-ending surgery to repair the UCL in his left elbow.
Oof. It’s unclear if Means will undergo another Tommy John surgery, or if he’ll have the internal brace procedure done, but either way he’ll miss the rest of the 2024 campaign and at least the start of the 2025 season while recovering. It’s just a brutal blow for the 31-year-old southpaw who worked so hard to come back from his last operation.

John Means will get a second opinion on his injured elbow.
The 31-year-old southpaw landed on the injured list with a left forearm strain on Thursday after exhibiting diminished velocity during Wednesday’s start against the Cardinals. It certainly sounds like he’s going to be looking at an extended absence, but we should have more clarity after he gets another opinion.

Orioles placed LHP John Means on the 15-day injured list with a left forearm strain.
It’s a sad turn of events for the 31-year-old who seems to be working his way back from arm injuries continuously. He made just four starts this season and left his last one with elbow discomfort. The Orioles have not yet announced the extent of the injury but given that Means has only thrown a combined 31 2/3 innings since 2021, it may be time to make other plans for fantasy leagues. Cole Irvin should move back into the rotation and Jonathan Heasley was called up in a corresponding move.

John Means was pulled from Wednesday’s start against the Cardinals after three innings due to discomfort in his elbow.
Means exhibited diminished velocity through the first three innings on Wednesday and was then removed after a lengthy rain delay. Orioles’ manager Brandon Hyde told reporters afterwards though that Means would have been done regardless of the rain. He’ll undergo further testing on his elbow to determine the severity of the issue. Fingers crossed.

Despite diminished velocity, John Means tossed three scoreless innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Cardinals.
Means was probably done for the day regardless after a lengthy rain delay halted play in the middle of the fourth inning, but it’s worth noting that the MASN broadcast showed him shaking his arm on several occasions and his average velocity was down to just 88.9 mph from 90.9 mph earlier this season. He allowed just one hit, issued a pair of walks and struck out one. There should be some clarity on his status at some point in the near future.

John Means logged a quality start in Friday evening’s victory over the Mariners, surrendering just two runs on six hits across six frames.
The 31-year-old southpaw punched out four batters on the night and didn’t allow a base on balls. He allowed an RBI single to Mitch Garver in the first inning, then served up a solo blast to Dylan Moore in the fifth, but that was the extent of the damage done against him in this one. Means got 11 swings and misses on 95 pitches on the night — eight of those on his changeup — while registering a CSW of 32 percent. Through his first three starts, he now sits at 2-0 with a 3.06 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and a 15/0 K/BB ratio over 17 2/3 innings. He’ll look to extend that dominance when he takes on the Cardinals in St. Louis on Wednesday.
