He will have to make back-to-back appearances before Rangers’ manager Buck Showalter feels comfortable activating Nelson. That will likely make Nelson’s return date some time next week.

On the day they were due to answer charges of assaulting a Fenway Park groundskeeper in the 2003 postseason, Jeff Nelson and Karim Garcia agreed to pretrial probation.

The players will perform 50 hours of community service and be evaluated to determine whether they need to attend an anger management program. If they have no problems over the next six months, the charges will be dropped.

Since Rhodes is the only lefty in the Seattle bullpen, Nelson would appear to be the favorite for the lion’s share of saves, and is definitely worth a pick up.

Nelson should be able to get a major league deal from someone. He was injured and ineffective for the Rangers last season, but it was the first time since 1999 he had posted an ERA over 4.00.

Nelson has been pitching in minor league games recently. “In his last outing, his velocity really jumped up,” manager Buck Showalter said. With Jeff Zimmerman out, Nelson should be Francisco Cordero’s primary setup man.
