Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Jeff Banister was part of the Pirates’ front-office layoffs on Friday.
Banister joined the Pirates as a special assistant after serving as manager of the Rangers between 2015-2018. Mackey notes that he was a candidate for the managerial gig in Pittsburgh this offseason and previously interviewed with the Astros. He should land another gig in baseball when the smoke clears on all of this.

Jon Heyman of Fancred reports that the Rangers have told Joe Girardi that he will not get their manager job.
He had previously pulled out of the running for the Reds’ job and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic had reported that Girardi is expected to remain in his analyst role at MLB Network. Heyman writes that the “industry speculation” is Girardi will wait a year in hopes that the Cubs job opens up. Still in the running for the Rangers job are Don Wakamatsu, Dusty Wathan, Jayce Tingler, Brandon Hyde, Joe Espada and Rocco Baldelli.

MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reports that Dodgers third base coach Chris Woodward “has emerged as a frontrunner” to be named the Rangers’ new manager.
Morosi cautions that the Rangers haven’t made a final decision yet and Twins bench coach Derek Shelton is also still a candidate, but it looks like Woodward might be the one to beat. He’s been the Dodgers’ third base coach for the past three seasons.

Jon Heyman of Fancred reports that the Rangers will interview Stubby Clapp for their vacant managerial position.
Clapp has been the Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year in back-to-back seasons at Triple-A Memphis in the Cardinals organization. St. Louis is expected to promote him to the major league coaching staff if he doesn’t landing a big league managing gig elsewhere.

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Rangers are interviewing Eric Chavez for their managerial opening.
Chavez was a finalist for the Angels’ job before Brad Ausmus landed it. He joins a long (and seemingly growing) list of candidates to replace Jeff Banister in Texas. That list includes Rangers interim manager Don Wakamatsu, Rangers farm director Jayce Tingler, Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde, Phillies third base coach Dusty Wathan, Astros bench coach Joe Espada, and Rays field coordinator Rocco Baldelli. There may be others.

Jeff Banister was fired on September 21.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Dodgers third base coach Chris Woodward and Twins bench coach Derek Shelton are strong candidates for the Rangers’ open manager position.
Rosenthal tweets that Woodward interviewed with the Rangers on Thursday, and that it reportedly went “extremely well.” Shelton interviewed Tuesday, and Texas has also spoken with interim manager Don Wakamatsu, Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde, Astros bench coach Joe Espada and several others. There’s no timetable as to when the Rangers will make a decision, but it sounds like Woodward and Shelton could be among the finalists.
