Padres signed OF Jason Heyward to a one-year, $1 million contract.
The deal, which includes an additional $250,000 in performance-related bonuses, is now official. Heyward heads to San Diego to help shore up their glaring lack of corner outfield depth. He’ll compete with Connor Joe and prospect Tirso Ornelas for at-bats between left field and DH. The 35-year-old veteran’s days as a fantasy-relevant contributor are probably in the rearview mirror, but he represents a legitimate upgrade for the Padres. He bounced around last year between the Dodgers and Astros, batting .211/.288/.412 with 10 homers and five steals across 258 plate appearances over 87 games.

The Athletic’s Dennis Lin reports the Padres are signing Jason Heyward.
The Padres were busy on Friday, agreeing to contracts with both Heyward and Connor Joe. Lin notes that the plan is for Heyward and Joe to platoon in left field, with the 35-year-old Heyward set to see strong side at-bats. He’s coming off of a brutal year at the plate in which he slashed a woeful .211/.288/.412 with 10 homers and 37 RBI in 258 plate appearances between the Dodgers and Astros. The chances of him suddenly returning to fantasy relevancy are small, but stranger things have happened.

Chas McCormick is starting in center field and hitting eighth in Game 2 of the WIld Card series against the Tigers on Wednesday.
McCormick will get the start in center against left-hander Tyler Holton — and then the Detroit bullpen — in a must-win game for the Astros, so Jake Meyers retreats to the bench. Jason Heyward is also in the lineup, replacing Mauricio Dubon. The full lineup for the Astros: Jose Altuve 2B, Kyle Tucker RF, Yordan Alvarez DH, Alex Bregman 3B, Yanier Diaz C, Victor Caratini 1B, Jeremy Peña SS, Jayson Heyward LF, and McCormick in center.

Jason Heyward went 1-for-3 with a solo home run against the Mariners on Monday.
Heyward’s home run was his ninth of the season. He hit a solo shot off Troy Taylor in the eighth inning. Heyward isn’t much of a fantasy option at this point in his career. He’s hitting .212 with a .696 OPS and 35 RBI on the year.

Yordan Alvarez is having an MRI on his right knee after waking up this morning “pretty sore,” according to manager Joe Espada.
Alvarez’s X-rays didn’t reveal a fracture, but he is dealing with some inflammation following Sunday’s awkward slide. Maybe he’ll make it back, but we wouldn’t want to have to count on him in fantasy leagues this week. Jason Heyward and Jon Singleton could be in line for extra playing time while Alvarez is out.
  • HOU Left Fielder #12
The Astros are planning on placing Ben Gamel on the injured list with his left knee contusion.
No word yet on who will come up his place, but Trey Cabbage, Pedro León and César Salazar would seem to be the likely candidates. Jason Heyward will continue to get extra at-bats with Gamel sidelined.

Jason Heyward went 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and a steal against the Angels on Sunday.
Heyward didn’t figure to have much of a role on the Astros with Kyle Tucker back, but Tucker is still limited and now Chas McCormick and Ben Gamel are hurt. Heyward has taken advantage and gone 5-for-8 with two homers in his last three appearances. He makes more sense as an outfield starter against righties than Mauricio Dubón does.
  • HOU Left Fielder #12
Ben Gamel is not in the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Angels.
Gamel was removed Saturday with a knee contusion, and the team will give him at least one more day to rest. The Astros will also give Alex Bregman a day off, so Jason Heyward gets a start in left field and Mauricio Dubon is the third baseman.

Jason Heyward’s first homer as an Astro was a two-run shot Thursday in the team’s 6-4 takedown of the A’s.
Heyward’s homer accounted for the only runs in seven innings against Mitch Spence, but the Astros rallied for four runs in the eighth to prevail. Heyward is 3-for-21 with four RBI in 12 appearances since joining the Astros on Aug. 29.
  • HOU Second Baseman #27
Jose Altuve is not in the starting lineup on Thursday against the A’s.
The veteran second baseman suffered an oblique injury in Wednesday night’s game that the team doesn’t believe is serious, but it will keep him out for at least one game and likely a couple more. Mauricio Dubon will start at second base and hit ninth on Thursday which will enable Jason Heyward to slide into the lineup in right field and bat eighth.
