He’ll replace the injured Avisail Garcia (knee) on the active roster. Coats is batting 091/.286/.136 in 29 plate appearances at the major league level this season. He can be ignored in most fantasy leagues.

Coats took a shoulder to the face and ended up with a very bloody lip, but there’s no word yet on if he sustained any major injuries. Avisail Garcia replaced him in left field.

Coats earned the promotion by hitting .335 with seven homers and 24 RBI in 43 games for Charlotte. He’ll make his major league debut Saturday against the Tigers. Coats is penciled in as the starting left fielder and will bat eighth against right-hander Mike Pelfrey.

With Austin Jackson hitting the disabled list, Coats could see a few extra at-bats in this newest stint at the big league level. The 26-year-old outfielder will be looking for his first major league hit next time steps to the plate. He went 0-for-5 in a brief cup of coffee earlier this month. His minor league numbers, at least, are cause for encouragement. Coats was slashing a healthy .335/.399/.567 with seven homers and 24 RBI with Triple-A Charlotte prior to Friday’s call to the bigs.
