Matt Chapman was named as the Rawlings’ Gold Glove Award winner at third base in the National League, marking the fifth time that the 31-year-old has received the honor.
Chapman wasted no time winning the award for the first time in the National League in his first season with the Giants -- impressively beating out Nolan Arenado to do it. Here’s the full list of Gold Glove winners in the National League (along with how many times they have won the award): C: Patrick Bailey (1), 1B: Christian Walker (3), 2B: Brice Turang (1), SS: Ezequiel Tovar (1), 3B Matt Chapman (5), P: Chris Sale (1), LF: Ian Happ (3), CF: Brenton Doyle (2), RF: Sal Frelick (1), UT: Jared Triolo (1).
  • PIT Shortstop #31
Liover Peguero will bat ninth and start at shortstop for the second straight day.
Peguero was called up from the minors on Tuesday following the controversial release of Rowdy Tellez. He has since started two games at shortstop with Isiah Kiner-Falefa moving to third base and Jared Triolo moving to first. We should expect that to be the lineup for the final few games of the season, which gives Peguero some value in deeper formats and means that Billy Cook seems to have lost his starting spot.
  • PIT Third Baseman #19
Jared Triolo went 3-for-4 with an RBI in a loss to the Brewers.
The 26-year-old has been starting regularly since Ke’Bryan Hayes landed on the injured list. In 20 games in September, Triolo has gone 20-for-69 (.289) with two home runs, nine runs scored, eight RBI, and one steal. Those aren’t eye-catching stats for fantasy leagues, but they’re solid enough for deeper formats.
  • PIT Third Baseman #19
Jared Triolo went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two walks against the Royals on Saturday.
Triolo was one of the bright spots for the Pirates in Saturday’s loss to the Royals, reaching in all four plate appearances. He drew a walk in the third inning, then knocked a base hit to lead off the fifth before scoring on a single by Oneil Cruz. Triolo walked once again in the sixth and got on base for a fourth time with a single in the eighth. The 26-year-old is slashing .218/.308/.321 with eight homers and 42 RBI across 400 plate appearances.
  • PIT Third Baseman #19
Jared Triolo hit a solo homer in a victory Wednesday over the Marlins.
Triolo made it 3-0 with a solo homer in the third. It’s just the eighth homer of the year for the rookie, and the 26-year-old has driven in 42 runs in 110 games. A perfect example of a player that can provide value to a club while not providing much to fantasy players.
  • PIT Third Baseman #19
Jared Triolo hit a three-run homer in a win over the Cubs on Tuesday.
Triolo gave the Pirates some cushion with a three-run shot in the seventh inning that extended their lead to 5-0. The 26-year-old provides the Pirates with versatility, but even with the occasional roundtripper — seven on the year now — his .206/.294/.305 slash makes him unplayable in fantasy.
  • PIT Shortstop #15
Oneil Cruz is batting third and starting in center field for the Pirates on Wednesday.
And so it begins. Early this week the Pirates had mentioned Cruz would see some time in center field to wrap up the season and after two days as a DH, Cruz will make his first career start in center field at any level. There may be some growing pains, but luckily we don’t play in fantasy leagues that penalize for defense. With Cruz in center field, Isiah Kiner-Falefa will remain the team’s starting shortstop with Jared Triolo at third base.
  • PIT Second Baseman #39
Pirates activated 2B Nick Gonzales from the 15-day injured list.
With Oneil Cruz moving to center, the Pirates are going to use Gonzales at second and Isiah Kiner-Falefa at shortstop. It means Jared Triolo, who appeared likely to be forced to the bench by Gonzales’s return, will keep playing third base for now. Gonzales, who missed four weeks with a groin injury, has hit .258/.293/.387 in 267 plate appearances for the Pirates this season.
  • PIT Third Baseman #13
Pirates placed 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes on the 10-day IL with low back inflammation.
Hayes finally provided some confirmation that he’s been dealing with back issues all season. It seemed like a safe assumption after he did miss time early on, especially with the way his defense has declined along with his offense. There’s been no indication yet whether he’ll attempt a return next month or if he might undergo surgery. With Hayes out, the Pirates will likely play Jared Triolo regularly for now. Nick Gonzales could return from a groin injury next week and take over at second, with Isiah Kiner-Falefa moving to third.
  • PIT Second Baseman #39
Nick Gonzales Igroin) is not in the starting lineup Sunday against the Padres.
Gonzales left Saturday’s game with left groin discomfort, and it’s not surprising to see him out of the lineup for Sunday’s finale against the Rockies. Jared Triolo gets the start in his absence. Gonzales should be considered day-to-day for now.
