Jake Cousins, who missed the end of the season with a strained pectroral muscle, is on the Yankees’ ALDS roster.
Marcus Stroman and Mark Leiter Jr. are absent, as the Yankees have chosen to go with 11 pitches. That opens up an extra spot on offense for Duke Ellis to serve as a pinch-runner. Ben Rice is also on the roster in place of Anthony Rizzo. DJ LeMahieu was not activated.

Jake Cousins (pec) will throw a bullpen Tuesday.
Cousins will then hopefully throw a live bullpen session Thursday. If those go well, there’s a good chance Cousins will be on the ALDS roster, and he’ll be a mid-to-late inning option for the Yankees’ bullpen in that series against the Orioles, Royals or Tigers.

Jake Cousins, placed on the IL with a pec strain Sunday, says he’s hoping to be on the Yankees’ ALDS roster.
He hasn’t resumed throwing yet, so it’s hard to say if that’s realistic. However, doctors didn’t find any major problems with his chest muscle. If healthy, Cousins should be one of the Yankees’ key relievers in October.

Yankees placed RHP Jake Cousins on the 15-day injured list with a right pectoral strain.
Cousins injured the pec during Thursday’s game against the Mariners. The right-hander’s regular season is over, but he could be back at some point for the Yankees during their postseason run. Clayton Beeter was recalled from Triple-A to take Cousins’ spot on the roster.

Jake Cousins left Thursday’s game against the Mariners with right pec tightness.
Cousins followed Clarke Schmidt, but his velocity was down upon entering the game. The Yankees decided to remove him after only two batters. New York is hoping for the best with one of its most trusted relievers this season. Cousins had a 2.37 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 53 strikeouts in 38 innings this year.

Tommy Kahnle got a double play ball from the only batter he faced to pick up his first save Sunday against the Red Sox.
Clay Holmes got two outs in the eighth today for his first hold. The Yankees could have stuck with him, but they opted to go to Jake Cousins for the save chance in a 4-1 game in the ninth. Plans changed after Cousins hit a batter and walked another, recording one out in between. Kahnle then came in to face Jarren Duran and got the game-ending grounder. It was his eighth career save in 10 big-league seasons. The Yankees will likely keep mixing and matching at the end of games for now.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that he will “get creative” with the closer’s role.
A night to think about it didn’t give Boone much clarity here, or at least if it did, he wasn’t very interested in sharing with the room. He said Clay Holmes is still part of the closing mix. It’s clear the Yankees don’t have anyone they really trust to replace him. 11 blown saves or no, he’s still their best reliever. No other specifics were mentioned pregame, but we imagine Jake Cousins will be in mix for saves for now.

Yankees recalled RHP Jake Cousins from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Cousins has allowed two earned runs on four hits in six innings at Triple-A while striking out eight and walking four. He’s also allowed one run on four hits in three innings for the Yankees this season. He’ll function as a fresh arm in a beleaguered bullpen. Yoendrys Gómez was optioned in a corresponding move.

Yankees optioned RHP Yoendrys Gómez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
Gómez was called up on Saturday after posting a 3.13 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and a 54/26 K/BB ratio over 46 innings in his 12 starts in the minors. However, he struggled in his only appearance with the Yankees, allowing five runs on four hits in two innings. He’ll go back into the Triple-A rotation and Jake Cousins was called up in a corresponding move.

Yankees optioned RHP Jake Cousins to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Cousins will head back to Triple-A to make room for Josh Maciejewski. The right-hander will be an up-and-down option for the Yankees throughout 2024.
