The move clears him from the 40-man roster. Barrett went down with right elbow inflammation in mid-June and was unable to return to the Yankees.

The move was made to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for the recently-acquired Edwin Encarnacion. Barrett has been sidelined since late May with right elbow inflammation and there’s still no clear timetable for his potential return.

It’s not clear how much time he might miss. Joe Harvey is taking Barrett’s spot in the Yanks’ bullpen.

Barrett will return to the Yanks’ bullpen ahead of Monday night’s series opener in Baltimore. The 27-year-old right-hander has surrendered six earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings this season at the MLB level.

Barrett allowed five runs over two innings on Wednesday in a blowout loss to the Mariners. The Yankees will promote Nestor Cortes to New York in a corresponding move. Neither player is worth tracking in any fantasy format.

He will take starter James Paxton’s (knee) spot on the roster and will serve in middle relief for the Yankees. Barrett has a career 4.05 ERA in 103 games with the Diamondbacks over the past three seasons. He had a 1.50 ERA in eight relief appearances at Triple-A before getting the call.

As noted by MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the 27-year-old right-hander has been with three different organizations since the beginning of February; the Yankees will be his fourth. Barrett was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh on the morning of Opening Day. He owns a 5.03 ERA over his last 35 relief appearances at the major league level and will function as minor league bullpen depth for New York.

It’s the third time in two months that Barrett has been DFA’d; the Diamondbacks let him go at the end of January and the Giants dropped him in late February. He pitched just two innings this spring before the Pirates ruled him out of contention for a bullpen spot.

Barrett is now with his third organization since late January. He’ll attempt to win a bullpen job in Pittsburgh.
