ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that “Atlanta seems poised to go into spring training with Ian Anderson and Grant Holmes...competing for a spot or two at the end of the rotation.”
Atlanta had attempted to sign Jeff Hoffman to compete for a spot in their rotation, but they flagged something in his physical and he eventually signed with the Blue Jays instead. Now Atlanta seems likely to have Anderson and Holmes come into spring training as the favorites for the final two spots in the rotation. Both players are out of minor league options, so they can’t be sent down without being passed through waivers, which will likely incentivize the Braves to keep both of them in the rotation until Spencer Strider is ready to make his return. Of the two, Holmes seems like the better late-round gamble in 2025 fantasy baseball drafts.

The Braves likely will call up a starter from Triple-A for Tuesday’s Wild Card game against the Padres.
Well, technically, it’s not a callup at this point, as much as simply adding someone to the Wild Card roster. But it’ll be a pitcher who didn’t finish the season on the major league club. MLB.com’s Mark Bowman says it’s between Ian Anderson, AJ Smith-Shawver and Bryce Elder but that no choice has been made. We doubt that’s really the case, but it’s true the Braves have no reason to reveal their pick just yet.

Ian Anderson walked five and allowed four runs — two earned — in five innings for Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.
Anderson’s early progress in his return from Tommy John surgery led to hope that he might help the Braves last year, but he seems to have plateaued since. He’s given up seven earned runs and walked nine over nine innings in his last two outings, and he has a 4.69 ERA in eight starts overall since joining Gwinnett. Last night, he averaged 92.4 mph with his fastball, compared to 94.0 mph in the majors in 2022.

Ian Anderson (elbow) allowed two runs over five innings on Thursday in a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Gwinnett.
Anderson struck out four and also issued three walks, needing 84 pitches (49 strikes) to complete five frames. The 26-year-old former impact fantasy contributor is working his way back from last year’s Tommy John surgery and could be an option for Atlanta’s starting rotation over the final few weeks over the regular season, if needed.

Ian Anderson (elbow) will make a minor league rehab start on Sunday for Low-A Augusta.
Anderson continues to work his way back from last April’s Tommy John surgery and figures to be an option for Atlanta’s starting rotation at some point following the All-Star break in a couple weeks.

Ian Anderson pitched two perfect innings, striking out four, in his first rehab start for the FCL Braves on Tuesday.
It was Anderson’s first game action since Tommy John surgery in Apr. 2023. He’s officially in the minors, so he won’t be under the constraints of a major league rehab assignment as he works his way back. There’s the chance we’ll see him in the majors later this year.

Ian Anderson (elbow) progressed to facing hitters on Monday in a live batting practice session.
Anderson underwent Tommy John surgery last April and is getting close to embarking on a minor league rehab assignment. The 26-year-old former top prospect should be an option for Atlanta’s starting rotation mix at some point in the second half.

Braves optioned RHPs Ian Anderson, Daysbel Hernández and Allan Winans, and LHP Dylan Dodd to Triple-A Gwinnett; Reassigned LHP Ben Bowden, RHP Tommy Doyle and C Tyler Tolve to minor league camp.
Anderson appeared in three games for Atlanta during spring camp and posted a 6.14 ERA over 7 and 1/3 innings of work. The 25-year-old struggled to keep the ball in play; two of his five hits allowed during camp were home runs. The former first-round pick in the 2016 MLB Draft hasn’t pitched in the majors since the 2022 season after he missed the entirety of last season due to Tommy John surgery.

The Braves announced Thursday that right-hander Ian Anderson underwent successful Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery.
The operation was performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Texas. The 24-year-old hurler will miss the entire 2023 season -- and likely the first half of the 2024 campaign -- while recovering from the procedure.

Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN report Ian Anderson will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.
Passan and McDaniel add that Anderson has been diagnosed with a torn UCL in his right elbow following his first start earlier this month for Triple-A Gwinnett. The 24-year-old former third-overall selection in the 2016 MLB Draft will miss the entire 2023 season. He was a key component of the Braves’ World Series run back in 2021, but struggled last year and was eventually jettisoned to the minors. He should be ready to return in the early stages of the 2024 campaign.
