Ha-Seong Kim is targeting a return in the middle of May.
Kim signed a two-year, $29 million deal with the Rays in February, but he won’t be ready for the season after undergoing labrum surgery in 2024. The 29-year-old still has a chance to be a fantasy-relevant player, and one who can be stashed on the injured list to begin 2025.

Rays signed SS Ha-Seong Kim to a two-year, $29 million contract.
The deal, which also includes $2 million in incentives and an opt-out following the 2025 season, is now official. Kim is expected to take over as Tampa Bay’s primary shortstop in late April or early May once he’s completed his rehabilitation process from offseason shoulder surgery. It’s unclear whether the previously elite stolen base totals are coming back after he managed only 22 thefts last year in 121 games. The 29-year-old infielder’s plate skills remain at near-elite levels, but he simply doesn’t make enough consistent hard contact to forecast anything beyond 10-15 homers. If he’s not swiping 30-plus bases it’s difficult to envision him making a significant fantasy impact, but his path to relevance is exponentially easier at the keystone as opposed to shortstop.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the Rays have agreed to terms with Ha-Seong Kim on a two-year contract.
Kim will reportedly get $29 million for the two-year pact. The 29-year-old also reportedly has as the ability to opt out of the deal after the 2025 season. Kim hit just 11 homers with a .700 OPS in 2024 before undergoing labrum surgery in August, but he’s viewed as one of the best defenders up the middle in the sport, and his quality approach at the plate fits in well with the Tampa Bay lineup. He should be an everyday player for the Rays, but Mark Feinsand of MLB.com notes that the expectation is that Kim won’t be ready until May.

Eric Samulski shares why second base will present an "interesting dilemma" in 2025 fantasy baseball drafts, including why managers should expect to pay up early or target value later on when eyeing the position.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that Ha-Seong Kim’s free agent market is cool as he recovers from labrum surgery.
The 29-year-old had a down year in 2024, hitting just 11 home runs with a .700 OPS before having labrum surgery in August. As Passan notes, “for a player whose big league value mostly has come from his defense” worries about Kim’s arm are “a fair concern.” Even though “Kim is targeting a late-April return,” considering “he does not want to sign at a severe discount,” teams have seemingly backed off until they can be more certain that the shoulder surgery won’t meaningful impact him in 2025. Despite missing at least a month of the season, a fully healthy Ha-Seong Kim would provide the team that signs him with strong defense and difference-making speed on the bases.
  • SF Third Baseman #26
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Matt Chapman has informed the Giants that he’s willing to play shortstop temporarily in 2025 if the team signs free agent Ha-Seong Kim.
Chapman is a five-time Gold Glove Award winner and two-time Platinum Glove Award winner at third base, but he has only played four games at shortstop during his big league career. He’s such a skilled defender though, that he could undoubtedly handle it with ease until Kim is recovered from his off-season shoulder surgery. The 31-year-old is expected to miss the start of the 2025 season at a minimum and could be sidelined for most of the first half. If the Giants slid Chapman over to shortstop temporarily, Tyler Fitzgerald would likely serve as the team’s starting third baseman until Kim was ready to return.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported that Ha-Seong Kim “has already generated lots of interest in the early days of free agency.
Specifically, Feinsand mentions that the Giants and Brewers have been the two teams most connected to Kim, with the Giants currently being the team most interested in signing the 29-year-old. Kim won a Gold Glove and received five down-ballot MVP votes in 2023, but he hit just 11 home runs with 47 RBIs, 22 stolen bases, and a .700 OPS in 121 games in 2024 before tearing his labrum in mid-August and missing the remainder of the season. If the Giants were to sign Kim, it would likely mean that Tyler Fitzgerald would move to more of a versatile role where he can play all over the field, which is what new GM Buster Posey has seemed to want.

Padres announced INF Ha-Seong Kim declined his mutual option for 2025.
Kim’s option was believed to be worth $8 million. Even though he’s expected to miss the beginning of next season following shoulder surgery, he’ll easily eclipse that as a free agent. It’s just up to him whether he wants to take a one-year deal to try to maximize his earning potential or to commit himself to a multiyear contract while coming off his worst year of the last three.
  • SD Second Baseman #7
Ha-Seong Kim underwent shoulder surgery on Thursday, according to Dennis Lin of the Athletic.
No information was provided about Kim’s return timeline. He was shutdown in September due to shoulder problems. Kim has a mutual option for 2025 in his contract, but is likely set to hit free agency.

Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder) has been shut down from baseball activity.
Kim was trying to work his way back from the shoulder issue that has sidelined him since the middle of August, but there just wasn’t enough progress made. The 28-year-old finished with a 233/.330/.370 slash line alongside 47 RBI and 22 stolen bases in 2024. Kim has a mutual option for 2025, but he’s likely going to be a highly-regarded free agent at the end of the year.

Ha-Seong Kim had difficulties with his injured shoulder while trying to make throws across the diamond Saturday, making a quick return to the Padres less likely.
Kim has been out since Aug. 19 with shoulder inflammation. There was some hope he might return this week, but it doesn’t look like that will happen. The Padres have been going with Mason McCoy at shortstop, but they might soon bite the bullet to move Xander Bogaerts back to his old spot, opening up more playing time for David Peralta and Donovan Solano.
