  • LAA Starting Pitcher #47
Griffin Canning surrendered two runs in five innings Saturday versus the Rangers.
Canning left with a five-run lead, which normally gets one a win. The Angels, though, managed to blow it. The good news for Canning in 2024 was that he qualified for the ERA title for the first time, throwing 171 2/3 innings. The bad is that he topped the AL by giving up 105 runs and 99 earned runs in the process. He ends the year 6-13 with a 5.19 ERA. Another organization might be able to get more out of him, but we wouldn’t expect the Angels to trade him this winter.

Griffin Canning allowed six hits and four runs with three walks and three strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision on Sunday against the Astros.
Canning looked solid until the third time through the Astros’ lineup when Alex Bregman and José Altuve took him. He was pulled after Bregman’s blast and would’ve been saddled with the loss if not for the Angels’ furious late rally. His season will mercifully come to an end after his next start against the Rangers.

Griffin Channing allowed only three hits over six innings in the Angels’ 5-0 shutout of the White Sox on Tuesday.
The White Sox were shut out for the 19th time this season. Only the 2019 Marlins (22), the 2022 Tigers (22) and the 2008 Nationals (21) have been shut out more often since 2000. It’s the first time since May 23, 2023 that Canning has been part of a shutout. He’s likely to make his next start Sunday against the Astros.

Griffin Canning surrendered ten runs -- nine earned -- with four strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Twins on Tuesday.
After a scoreless first inning, Canning surrendered four runs in the second, including a three-run homer by Kyle Farmer. Matt Wallner then took him deep for a solo homer in the third. Another home run in the fifth made it eight runs for the Twins. Canning was left out to pitch the sixth, giving up a tenth run before he was removed with two outs. The 28-year-old right-hander will take a 5.35 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and a 117/59 K/BB ratio across 156 1/3 innings into a start against the White Sox in Anaheim on Monday.

Griffin Canning allowed one run with seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a win over the Dodgers on Wednesday.
Canning had one of his better starts of the season against a tough Dodgers lineup. He held them scoreless through six innings before a walk and two base hits brought the one run in to score. Canning struck out seven on his way to the victory. The 28-year-old right-hander will take a 5.02 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and a 113/56 K/BB ratio across 150 2/3 innings into a start against the Twins in Minnesota on Monday.

Griffin Canning wasn’t at his best in Wednesday night’s loss to the Tigers, giving up three runs on five hits over his five innings of work.
The 28-year-old right-hander also issued four walks on the evening while striking out four. He served up a mammoth two-run homer to Spencer Torkelson in the second inning and an RBI single to Kerry Carpenter in the third, which was enough to do him in. Canning generated 11 swings and misses on 93 pitches on the evening, posting a CSW of 27 percent. He’ll look to bounce back as he totes a 4-12 record, 5.19 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and a 106/52 K/BB ratio (144 innings) into a tough matchup against the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Griffin Canning tossed six scoreless innings and got a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Thursday.
Canning was used as the bulk reliever for the first time. He came in after the Angels used multiple relievers to open the ballgame. Canning gave up two hits, walked none and struck out six. He’s struck out at least six in four of his last six starts. How the Angels will deploy Canning in his next outing is unclear. He has a 5.18 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 102 strikeouts in 139 innings this season. With only four wins in 26 appearances, he doesn’t have much fantasy appeal.

Griffin Canning was torched for seven runs over 4 1/3 innings on Saturday in a loss to the Braves.
It’s probably time to cut bait on the idea of Canning as a viable mixed-league fantasy contributor as he’s struggled to a disastrous 5.41 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 96/48 K/BB ratio across 133 innings (25 starts) this season. The 28-year-old righty will sprinkle in the occasional quality start, but he’s simply not missing enough bats from a fantasy standpoint to offset the volatility in the run-prevention department. He’ll square off against the Blue Jays on Thursday up at the Rogers Centre.

Griffin Canning pitched seven innings and allowed four runs Saturday against the Nationals.
Canning left it all to his defense tonight. He became the first pitcher since Dakota Hudson last September to complete seven innings without striking out a batter and the first since Jacob Nix on Aug. 28, 2018 to go seven innings without a strikeout or a walk. We wouldn’t say it was an encouraging showing, but he did match his longest start of the year, and the game was tied when he departed.

Griffin Canning defeated the Mets by allowing two runs — one earned — in five innings Sunday.
Canning fanned eight batters, topping his season high by two. He also managed to avoid giving up a homer for the first time in 10 starts. The win was his first since June 24, and he moved to 4-10 with a 5.10 ERA overall.
