Greg Weisert allowed a run while picking up a save Saturday against the Yankees.
It’s the second save of the season for Weissert. He came in to protect a two-run cushion, so a fielder’s choice off the bat of Anthony Volpe that scored Paul Goldschmidt didn’t hurt the Red Sox; just Weissert’s ERA. It seems unlikely he’ll get many more save chances, but that’s two in the last week.

With Aroldis Chapman unavailable, Greg Weissert threw a scoreless ninth and picked up his first save of the year Tuesday against the Rays.
Chapman worked the previous three days, making him due for at least one day off. Garrett Whitlock, who threw scoreless seventh and eighth innings, and Weissert picked up the Red Sox tonight after a tough one Monday. Weissert has a 2.67 ERA though 30 1/3 innings. Along with the save, he’s earned 11 holds in 32 appearances. He’d recorded seven holds in 91 career relief appearances coming into 2025.

Aroldis Chapman worked a hitless ninth for his ninth save Sunday against the Braves.
Chapman got a quick visit from the trainer in the middle of the outing, but he continued without making any warmup throws. If he did tweak something, it didn’t seem to be an arm issue. The Red Sox could ill afford to lose him anyway, but that’s especially the case after they already put Justin Slaten on the IL today. Greg Weissert is probably next in line for saves ahead of Garrett Whitlock.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #57
Red Sox recalled RHP Greg Weissert from Triple-A Worcester.
Weissert has pitched pretty well this season in his Boston debut, registering a serviceable 4.10 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 49/18 K/BB ratio across 48 1/3 innings (47 appearances). The 29-year-old righty figures to continue operating in middle relief.

Red Sox optioned RHP Greg Weissert to Triple-A Worcester.
Weissert was sent down in a corresponding move for Boston to call up Joely Rodriguez from Triple-A. He had a 4.10 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 49 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings out of the bullpen for Boston this year.

Red Sox recalled RHP Greg Weissert from Triple-A Worcester.
Weissert got a nice little break in Triple-A, pitching just four times in three weeks and allowing one run in six innings. If he resumes performing like he did over the first two months of the season, he could turn into a key reliever for the Red Sox. Overall, he has a 4.24 ERA in 46 2/3 innings in the majors this season.

Red Sox optioned Greg Weissert to Triple-A Worcester.
Weissert was solid to start the season for the Red Sox but has a 6.46 ERA since May 31. The 29-year-old has allowed 27 hits and walked 12 in his last 23 2/3 innings, so he really needed a minor league re-set. Perhaps he’ll get another chance in the big league bullpen later this summer, but Trey Wingenter will be called up to take his place for now.

Red Sox recalled RHP Trey Wingenter from Triple-A Worcester.
The Red Sox bullpen has been absolutely brutal in July and has blown eight leads in the seventh inning or later since coming back from the All-Star break. They’ll hope that Wingenter can help with that. The 30-year-old has been electric since coming to the Red Sox from Detroit, pitching to a 1.50 ERA in six innings at Triple-A with an 11:2 K:BB ratio, so the team will hope he can also get out big league hitters. Greg Weissert was optioned in a corresponding move.

Greg Weissert allowed an unearned run while picking up a save against the Marlins on Thursday.
The run was the “zombie” runner that starts at second base to begin every inning after the ninth. That’s the first save of the season for Weissert, and being blunt, it’s very likely the last.

Red Sox acquired RHP Greg Weissert, RHP Richard Fitts and RHP Nicholas Judice from the Yankees for OF Alex Verdugo.
Weissert has oscillated back-and-forth between the Yankees’ bullpen and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre the past two seasons. The 28-year-old righty provides the Red Sox with another low-leverage relief option for their bullpen mix heading into the 2024 campaign.
