Cubs signed OF Greg Allen to a minor league contract.
Allen didn’t appear in the big leagues last year after getting into 22 contests for the Yankees back in 2023. The 31-year-old speedster fortifies Chicago’s outfield depth back at Triple-A Iowa. He doesn’t offer much at the plate anymore, but he offers plenty of experience having appeared in 304 contests at the highest level since 2017, and could wind up being a useful break glass in case of emergency stopgap.

Yankees signed OF Greg Allen to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
This will be Allen’s third stint with the Yankees, as he got into 15 games with the team in 2021 and 22 last season before he was let go. He’s actually hit a fine .250/.387/.450 in his 76 plate appearances for the Bombers, giving him an .837 OPS that is about 250 points higher than he’s amassed in his 752 plate appearances with other teams. There’s the chance he could make the team as a fifth outfielder, but it doesn’t seem particularly likely.

Allen signed a minor league contract with the Brewers back in late August, but never wound up reaching the majors in Milwaukee.

Brewers signed OF Greg Allen to a minor league contract
Allen was designated for assignment by the Yankees earlier this month and passes through waivers, so he elected to become a free agent. The 30-year-old’s primary asset remains his speed, and he did have three steals in 22 games for the Yankees this year. He will most likely report to Triple-A Nashville but could be used as a pinch runner in Milwaukee down the stretch.

Greg Allen has elected free agency.
Allen passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment earlier this week by the Yankees. The 30-year-old outfielder got into just 22 games this season for New York. He might be able to latch on somewhere else as a pinch-running specialist.

Yankees designated OF Greg Allen for assignment.
Allen has been removed from New York’s 40-man roster to make room for top prospect Everson Pereira to ascend to the majors. The 30-year-old speedster has three steals in 22 games this season as a reserve outfielder for the Yankees.

Billy McKinney is absent from Saturday’s game against the Red Sox due to back stiffness.
Due to the injury, Greg Allen will start in his first game since July 30. The injury doesn’t appear to be serious, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he is available off the bench. The 28-year-old .232/.322/.416 with six homers across 143 plate appearances this season.

Jake Bauers is not in the Yankees’ starting lineup for Saturday’s contest against the Red Sox.
It appears to be a regular day off for the 27-year-old. D.J. Lemahieu shifts over to cover first base while Greg Allen gets a start in left field on Saturday. Bauers is hitting .210/.289/.439 with 11 homes across 232 plate appearances this season.

Yankees activated OF Greg Allen from the 10-day injured list.
Allen had been on the shelf since early June with a right hip flexor strain. The speedy veteran hit .316/.409/.474 with two stolen bases and one homer across 22 plate appearances during his rehab assignment at Low-A and High-A.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Friday that Greg Allen is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with a right hip flexor strain.
It didn’t sound initially as though Allen was going to be looking at an extended absence when he landed on the injured list over the weekend, but it looks like he will indeed be out for a while. He’ll be shelved until after the All-Star break at a minimum -- and it could be August before he’s able to return to action.
