Cubs acquired OF Gilberto Celestino from the Pirates for cash considerations.
It’s not exactly blockbuster fantasy managers have been waiting for since Celestino hasn’t appeared in the majors since getting into 145 contests for the Twins from 2021 to 2022. The 25-year-old is a strong defensive outfielder and provides the Cubs with some extra organizational depth moving forward. He’s batted .271/.348/.356 with three homers and nine steal across 264 plate appearances over 67 games this season for Triple-A Indianapolis.
  • PIT Center Fielder #21
Gilberto Celestino hit a grand slam against the Rays on Friday.
Celestino is a longshot to get significant time in the majors this season with Pittsburgh, but a grand slam is a grand slam. Celesinto signed a minor-league deal with the Pirates in November and was one of eight players to get an invite to spring camp. He slashed 238/.313/.302 with the Twins in 122 games during the 2022 season and hasn’t played in the majors since.
  • PIT Left Fielder #57
Pirates OF Billy McKinney and seven other players were invited to spring training.
McKinney was acquired in a trade with the Yankees in December after playing 48 games for New York this season. The 29-year-old has a career slash line of .209/.284/.390. The seven other players invited to major league spring training were INF Sergio Alcantara, OF Gilberto Celestino, RHP Ben Heller, INF/OF Jake Lamb, LHP Michael Plassmeyer, RHP Ryder Ryan, and RHP Hunter Stratton.
  • PIT Center Fielder #21
Pirates signed OF Gilberto Celestino to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
The 24-year-old outfielder was limited to 55 games for the Twins this year after suffering a ruptured UCL in his left thumb in May 2023. He previously appeared 122 games in 2022, posting a .238/.313/.302 slash line with two home runs, 30 runs, 24 RBI, and four steals. He’s an excellent defender, but doesn’t bring much on the offensive end.
  • MIN Center Fielder #21
Twins sent OF Gilberto Celestino outright to Triple-A St. Paul.
Celestino went unclaimed on waivers after being removed from Minnesota’s 40-man roster at the conclusion of the regular season. The 24-year-old outfielder is an excellent defender, but doesn’t offer much at the dish from an offensive standpoint. He’ll presumably stick around with the Twins as extra organizational depth.
  • MIN Center Fielder #21
