Athletics optioned RHPs Joey Estes and Royber Salinas, LHP Brady Basso, INF Jordan Diaz and OF Lazaro Armenteros to Triple-A Las Vegas; re-assigned LHPs Jack O’Loughlin and Francisco Perez, INF Brett Harris, C Yohel Pozo and RHPs Gerson Moreno, Vinny Nittoli and Gerardo Reyes to minor league camp.
It’s a large batch of cuts, and there’s definitely some talent mixed in there, but no one who was truly expected to crack the team’s Opening Day roster. Jordan Diaz saw significant time with the A’s during the 2023 season and he’ll surely get another chance at some point in 2024. Estes is somewhat surprising, as he was absolutely dealing in Cactus League play — posting a 1.29 ERA, 0.43 WHIP and an 8/1 K/BB ratio across seven innings in his three outings.
  • ATH Relief Pitcher
Athletics signed RHP Gerson Moreno to a minor league contract.
Moreno provides the Athletics with some extra organizational relief depth heading into next season. The 28-year-old righty has yet to reach the majors and spent all of last season at Triple-A Rochester in the Nationals’ system, finishing with a solid 3.14 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 91/50 K/BB ratio across 71 2/3 innings (59 appearances).
  • Relief Pitcher
Nationals signed RHP Gerson Moreno to a minor league contract.
Moreno will serve as organizational relief depth for the Nationals after nearly a decade in the Tigers’ system. The 27-year-old righty registered a solid 3.32 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 96/33 K/BB ratio across 57 innings (48 appearances, one start) last season for Double-A Erie.

  • Relief Pitcher
Tigers re-signed RHP Gerson Moreno to a minor league contract.
Moreno, 26, registered a 4.59 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 73/29 K/BB ratio in 49 innings of relief last season between Double-A Erie and Triple-Toledo. The hard-throwing right-hander originally joined the Tigers organization as a teenager out of the Dominican Republic in 2012.

  • Relief Pitcher
Gerson Moreno is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery next month.
That helps explain why the Tigers released him on Wednesday afternoon. Moreno might have to wait until he is several months into his rehab before another organization comes calling. The 22-year-old right-hander had registered a 5.29 ERA, 1.82 WHIP, and 21/14 K/BB ratio over 17 innings of relief this season at Double-A Erie.
  • Relief Pitcher
    Tigers released RHP Gerson Moreno.
Moreno was added to the Tigers’ 40-man roster in November so that he would be protected from the Rule 5 Draft, but the 22-year-old right-hander had registered an ugly 5.29 ERA, 1.82 WHIP, and 21/14 K/BB ratio over 17 innings of relief this season at Double-A Erie. He should latch on with a different organization.
  • Relief Pitcher
Tigers re-signed RHP Gerson Moreno to a minor league contract.
Moreno was released by the Tigers last week and is scheduled to undergo season-ending Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery sometime this month, but he will rehab as a member of the organization on a reworked deal. The 22-year-old right-hander had posted a 5.29 ERA, 1.82 WHIP, and 21/14 K/BB ratio in 17 innings of relief this season at Double-A Erie.
  • Relief Pitcher
Tigers purchased the contract of RHP Gerson Moreno from Double-A Erie.
Moreno, 22, posted a 4.47 ERA and 66/25 K/BB ratio across 50 1/3 frames between High- and Double-A in 2017. He’s now protected from the Rule 5 Draft.
