Garabito

Garabito has been optioned and recalled twice in eight days. He has a 4.88 ERA in 16 appearances for the Rangers this season.

It’s the second time Garabito has been optioned in a week. It’s possible this is it for him this year, but he’ll probably be back if some other Rangers pitcher goes on the IL.

Garabito is back a day after being sent down to Round Rock, and can do so because Jose Ureña was placed on the injured list.

Garabito’s services are no longer required with Max Scherzer coming off the injured list Saturday. Garabito will need an IL stint for another member of the Texas staff if he’s going to return in 2024.

Garabito wasn’t exactly an opener tonight, but it does seem like the Rangers always intended for José Ureña to go long, and Ureña did, throwing the final 5 2/3 innings of the 5-1 defeat. Garabito was making his second start in his 12th appearance for Texas, and he has a 3.10 ERA in 20 1/3 innings. Garabito will likely return to either Triple-A or the bullpen in the coming days.

Garabito is back with the Rangers in the wake of veteran Jon Gray hitting the injured list with a season-ending foot issue. The 29-year-old righty has posted a respectable 2.65 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 13/8 K/BB ratio across 17 innings (10 appearances, one start).

Garabito was the player of the game for the Rangers yesterday, throwing four hitless innings in relief of an ineffective Tyler Mahle and giving the team a chance to come back, which it did in the 10-inning win. And this was the inevitable reward, since the four-inning appearance meant he would need at least two days off. It’s unfortunate for Garabito, who has a 2.65 ERA in one start and nine relief appearances this season.

With Jon Gray going on the IL, Garabito is back just four days after he was demoted Thursday. He’s allowed one earned run in 6 2/3 innings in the majors this season.
