Reds and 2B Gavin Lux avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.325 million contract.
The Reds’ decision to trade for Lux looked like a pretty good one, but we’re far more skeptical about this plan to turn him into a utilityman instead of just leaving him alone at second base. The 27-year-old is coming off a strong second half as part of a 2024 season in which he hit .251/.320/.383 overall. He has some additional offensive potential while hitting in GABP, but the Reds seem more concerned with his defensive potential, for some reason.

Reds acquired INF/OF Gavin Lux from the Dodgers for OF Mike Sirota and a Competitive Balance pick.
The deal is now official. Lux was outstanding in the second half of last year for the Dodgers, batting .304/.391/.508 with seven homers and two steals in 210 plate appearances over his final 61 contests, after missing the entire 2023 season recovering from a torn ACL. The 27-year-old former top prospect became expendable for Los Angeles last weekend after the club signed Korean second baseman Hyeseong Kim. He figures to occupy a versatile multi-position role for Cincinnati with Matt McLain possibly moving to center field. It’s a great landing spot for fantasy purposes, if he’s able to carve out an everyday role.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports the Reds are acquiring Gavin Lux from the Dodgers.
It’s unclear how exactly Lux fits into Cincinnati’s overcrowded infield mix but he provides them with a versatile multi-position bench option. It’s possible Matt McLain will shift to center field next season, where he played during the Arizona Fall League. The 27-year-old former top prospect, who came on strong during the second half of last year after missing the entire 2023 season recovering from a torn ACL, became expendable after the Dodgers signed Korean second baseman Hyeseong Kim last weekend. Passan adds that outfield prospect Mike Sirota and a competitive balance draft pick are heading to Los Angeles in the deal.

According to Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated, both the Mariners and Yankees have inquired with the Dodgers about second baseman Gavin Lux.
Ragazzo notes that the Yankees called about Lux several weeks ago — before the Dodgers signed Hyeseong Kim to add to their infield mix. He also notes that the Mariners have been much more aggressive in their pursuit of Lux. The Dodgers haven’t publicly said that they’re listening to offers on Lux, but it seems like something has to give there after signing Kim to a three-year pact earlier in the week. Stay tuned.

The Athletic’s Britt Ghiroli said that “Lux becomes expendable” with the news that Mookie Betts will move back into the infield.
The Dodgers are looking to add a right fielder and push Mookie Betts back into the infield. With Betts in the infield along with Tommy Edman, Max Muncy, and Miguel Rojas, it seems that Gavin Lux may need to find an opportunity with another team. Perhaps the Dodgers could move Lux in their quest to add more outfield depth, but where the 26-year-old ends up will have a huge impact on his potential fantasy value.
  • LAD Right Fielder #50
Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes told reporters the assumption is that Mookie Betts will move back to the infield next season.
Betts played a pivotal role this past season in leading the Dodgers to their second World Series title in the last five seasons, splitting time between right field, shortstop and second base. The assumption here seems to be that Tommy Edman will transition back to the outfield on a more permanent basis next season with Los Angeles bringing in some additional free agent reinforcements. The big development here for fantasy purposes is that it seems highly likely Betts will regain second base eligibility at some point in the early stages of the 2025 campaign.

Gavin Lux has been dropped to the ninth spot in the Dodgers lineup for Game 5 of the World Series.
Lux has reached four times in 11 plate appearances against the Yankees, but just one of those has come via a hit. The lineup: DH Shohei Ohtani, RF Mookie Betts, 1B Freddie Freeman, LF Teoscar Hernández, 3B Max Muncy, CF Kiké Hernández, SS Tommy Edman, C Will Smith, 2B Lux.

Gavin Lux (hip) is playing second base and hitting sixth Wednesday for Game 3 of the NLCS against the Dodgers.
Lux was removed from the lineup against the Mets with a hip flexor issue in Game 1 and didn’t play Game 2, but with right-hander Luis Severino on the mound, he’s back at the keystone for the pivotal Game 3. The full lineup for Los Angeles: DH Shohei Ohtani, RF Mookie Betts, 1B Freddie Freeman, 3B Max Muncy, LF Teoscar Hernandez, 2B Lux, C Will Smith, SS Tommy Edman and CF Enrique Hernandez.
  • LAD Center Fielder #44
Andy Pages is starting in center field and batting ninth for Game 2 of the NLCS against the Mets.
With the Mets throwing left-hander Sean Manaea, the Dodgers will sit Gavin Lux, move Enrique Hernandez to second base, and insert Pages into the lineup to play center field. It will be the rookie’s first career postseason start.

Gavin Lux left Sunday’s NLCS Game 1 with hip flexor tightness, according to the Dodgers.
If it had to happen, this is at least a decent time for it, as he wasn’t going to start against a lefty in Game 2 and he’ll get another day off before Game 3. Kevin Kiermaier replaced him against the Mets, with Enrique Hernández moving to the infield.
