Liam Hendriks was clocked at 93-94 mph during his live bullpen session Tuesday.
Not bad for the start of spring. Hendrick has not pitched in the majors since 2023, but the 36-year-old is not long removed from being one of the best bullpen arms in all of baseball. If healthy, there’s a chance Hendriks wins the closer’s role with Boston, but he will be competing with Aroldis Chapman, Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #31
Liam Hendriks, Aroldis Chapman, Justin Wilson, Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten are candidates to close for the Red Sox.
The five potential candidates were specifically highlighted by Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow on Tuesday at the outset of spring training, just a few hours after former stopper Kenley Jansen agreed to a one-year pact with the Angels. Hendriks and Chapman are the clear-cut favorites to secure Boston’s ninth-inning role given their extensive closing experience, but Slaten — who was outstanding last year as a Rule 5 selection — and Whitlock figure to be in the mix for high-leverage roles. Red Sox manager Alex Cora re-affirmed to reporters Tuesday that he would prefer a set closer as opposed to mixing and matching. If healthy, Hendriks seems like the logical choice to win the competition this spring, but he’s thrown just five innings in the big leagues over the past two seasons. It’s a developing situation fantasy managers should monitor once Grapefruit League action kicks off.

Garrett Whitlock said Saturday that he will be shifting back to the bullpen this season.
It’s no surprise, but it’s nice that the pitcher is confirming it, since the brass wasn’t yet willing to. Whitlock is coming off internal brace surgery, but he expects to be ready for Opening Day or at least soon afterwards. He unfortunately struggled to stay healthy as a starter, but he has a 2.65 ERA with a 150/29 K/BB in 132 2/3 career innings as a reliever. He might be a fallback in the closer’s role if Liam Hendriks struggles.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #22
Garrett Whitlock (elbow) is expected to be ready for the start of next season.
It’s an encouraging update after Whitlock underwent an internal brace procedure on his right elbow back in May. The influx of new arrivals to the Red Sox’ starting rotation mix, most notably Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler, means that he’ll likely shift back to the bullpen. It’s a hit to his immediate fantasy outlook, but he was outstanding in a high-leverage role a couple years ago when he first got to Boston.

Red Sox reinstated RHPs Isaiah Campbell, Lucas Giolito, Liam Hendriks, Bryan Mata, and Garrett Whitlock, and LHP Chris Murphy from the 60-Day IL.
This was just a procedural move as today was the deadline for the Red Sox to move them onto the 40-man roster. There’s a chance each pitcher will be healthy for the start of the 2025 season. Hendriks, Whitlock, and Campbell all figure to have a good chance to open the season in the bullpen, and Giolito has a chance to be in the rotation early in the season.

Red Sox transferred RHP Garrett Whitlock from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.
Whitlock is now off the 40-man roster. The 27-year-old right-hander will miss the rest of 2024 as he underwent an internal brace procedure on his right elbow in late May. His next chance to pitch will likely come in the early portion of the 2025 campaign.

Garrett Whitlock underwent internal brace procedure on his right elbow on Thursday.
The good news here is that Whitlock didn’t wind up requiring a full Tommy John elbow reconstruction, which gives him a chance to be ready to return during the early stages of the 2025 season.

Garrett Whitlock said Saturday the he expects to undergo a season-ending internal brace procedure on his right elbow.
Whitlock has ligament damage in his right elbow and is headed for surgery next week with Dr. Jeff Dugas in Alabama. The expectation, according to the 27-year-old righty, is that he’ll undergo an internal brace procedure that carries a shorter return timeline than Tommy John surgery. The hope is that he’ll be ready for the early stages of the 2025 campaign.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #22
Garrett Whitlock (elbow) will meet with Dr. Jeff Dugas next week to get a final opinion on whether or not he’ll require surgery.
Whitlock has been diagnosed with UCL damage in his elbow and surgery has been advised, but it looks like they want to hear it from at least one more doctor before he goes under the knife. The expectation remains that Whitlock will miss the remainder of the 2024 season — and part of the 2025 campaign as well — while recovering.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #22
Garrett Whitlock has UCL damage in his elbow and will receive a second opinion later this week.
Unfortunate, but it did seem like was coming. Assuming that Whitlock has surgery, he’ll almost certainly miss the rest of the season, and his return next year might come as a reliever.
