Reds optioned RHP Connor Phillips and OF Bubba Thompson to Triple-A Louisville; reassigned OF Conner Capel, IF/OF Mark Mathias and INF Erik Gonzalez to minor league camp.
The Reds have cut down their major league camp to 39 players. Phillips will start the 2024 campaign at Triple-A Louisville where he posted a 4.69 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and a 43/30 K/BB ratio across 40 1/3 innings. The 22-year-old was called up to the majors for a brief stint last September where he made five starts, but struggled with a 6.97 ERA and allowed 16 earned runs across 20 2/3 innings.
  • CIN Shortstop #15
Reds signed INF Erik González to a minor league contract.
The deal presumably also includes an invitation to spring training. González has appeared in 352 games in the big leagues since 2016, but spent all of this past season at Triple-A Charlotte in the White Sox’ system. The 32-year-old veteran journeyman becomes the latest addition to Cincinnati’s efforts to bolster their utility infielder depth behind their young nucleus at the major league level.
  • BOS Second Baseman #23
Romy Gonzalez and Lenyn Sosa will compete in spring training for the White Sox’ starting job at second base.
Barring an unexpected acquisition prior to Opening Day, Gonzalez and Sosa are the most likely internal options to fill the White Sox’ second-base void. Veteran journeymen Hanser Alberto and Erik González are in camp on minor league deals, but don’t exactly profile as viable everyday options. It sounds like Chicago is penciling Leury Garcia into a utility role. There isn’t a ton of fantasy appeal here, but it’s a position battle worth following for managers in AL-only formats.

  • FA Third Baseman #15
White Sox signed INF Erik González to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
The White Sox intend to hold an open competition for the starting job at second base, so why not invite another offensively-challenged middle infielder to the party. The 30-year-old journeyman hit a paltry .189/.268/.216 with no homers, three RBI and one stolen base in 41 plate appearances last season for the Marlins.

  • FA Third Baseman #15
Marlins sent INF Erik González outright to Triple-A Jacksonville.
González went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment last week and will remain with the Marlins as extra infield depth. The 30-year-old utility infielder hit .189/.268/.216 with one stolen base in 41 plate appearances this season at the major-league level.

  • FA Third Baseman #15
Marlins designated INF Erik González for assignment
González was only up for a few days. He’s clearing out to make room for Joey Wendle’s return.

  • FA Third Baseman #15
Marlins purchased the contract of INF Erik González from Triple-A Jacksonville.
González will replace Willians Astudillo as extra infield depth on the Marlins’ active roster. The 30-year-old has hit well at Triple-A Jacksonville, posting a .339/.376/.431 slash line with one homer and seven steals across 186 plate appearances.

  • FA Third Baseman #15
Marlins returned INF Erik Gonzalez to Triple-A Jacksonville.
Gonzalez goes back with the Marlins making a plethora of moves on Thursday. he 30-year-old was playing well in Triple-A before the promotion, and he has a chance to add to those numbers. Not that they help fantasy managers, but Gonzalez can take some pride in that.

  • NYY Center Fielder #13
Jazz Chisholm Jr. (hamstring) is out of the Marlins’ lineup again on Wednesday.
Chisholm hasn’t appeared in a game since making an early exit from Sunday’s series finale versus the Braves because of left hamstring tightness. Erik Gonzalez will cover second base and hit ninth for Miami on Wednesday night against the Rays and right-hander Drew Rasmussen.

  • LAD Shortstop #72
Miguel Rojas (calf) remains out of the Marlins’ starting lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Rays.
Rojas also sat out Sunday’s series finale against the Braves after making an early exit Saturday with left calf tightness. He should be considered day-to-day for now. It’ll be Erik González occupying shortstop and batting eighth Tuesday night in his absence.
