Villalobos heads to Detroit as extra organizational relief depth after making three relief appearances earlier this year for the Marlins. The 26-year-old righty elected free agency earlier this month following his removal from Miami’s 40-man roster.

Villalobos passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment earlier this week. The 26-year-old righty has been removed from Miami’s 40-man roster, but will remain with the organization as extra relief depth.

Villalobos was already in the minors, but this clears a spot on the 40-man for Xavier Edwards. Villalobos made his MLB debut for the Marlins earlier this month, allowing one run in 4 1/3 innings out of the pen. He has strikeout ability with his slider and splitter, but he’s pretty wild and he’s also been homer-prone in the minors.

Villalobos heads back to the minors to make room for Jesús Luzardo to return from the injured list ahead of Saturday’s showdown against th Philies after allowing one run over 4 1/3 innings in three appearances for the Marlins.

Villalobos was called up over the weekend by the Marlins as extra relief depth. The 26-year-old righty made his big-league debut over the weekend and figures to continue to pitching in middle relief.

Villalobos was just claimed off waivers last week from the Pirates and will head back into roster purgatory just a few days ahead of the All-Star break. The 26-year-old righty has yet to pitch in the majors in his career.

The right-hander had been designated for assignment by the Pirates last week. Villalobos was then assigned to Double-A Pensacola. The 26-year-old hurler returns to the only organization that he ever knew before the Pirates claimed him off of waivers in mid-April.

The Pirates needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster for the arrival of Henry Davis on Monday and it looks like Villalobos was the odd-man out. The 25-year-old hurler has compiled a 4.15 ERA,1.67 WHIP and a 16/15 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings at Triple-A Indianapolis this season.

Villalobos will head to Triple-A Indianapolis as extra relief depth for the Pirates. The 25-year-old righty was designated for assignment last week by the Marlins and represents an interesting project for Pittsburgh. He posted a solid 2.86 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 101/29 K/BB ratio over 78 2/3 innings (52 appearances) last season between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Jacksonville.
