Elehuris Montero has signed a one-year contract with the Hiroshima Carp of the Nippon Professional Baseball league.
The deal will pay Montero $850,000 with a $400,00 signing bonus. Elehuris was outrighted off the Colorado roster after hitting just .228/.277/.387 in 2024 with the Rockies, and the 26-year-old will try and get his career back on the upswing with at least one year in Japan.

Elehuris Montero went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI for Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday.
We would have guessed we’d seen the last of Montero with the Rockies when he was dropped from the roster at the end of June, but he’s really crushed in Triple-A after clearing waivers, hitting .408/.487/.767 with nine homers in 25 games. It might get him one more chance in the coming weeks.
  • COL Third Baseman #44
Rockies sent INF Elehuris Montero outright to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Montero was designated for assignment last weekend after hitting .205 with a .571 OPS so far this season. With nobody claiming him on waivers, he will return to Triple-A where he hit .359 in 35 games last year with 15 home runs and 48 RBI. He may simply be a good Triple-A hitter who never quite finds his footing at the big league level.

Rockies designated INF Elehuris Montero for assignment.
Montero is removed from the 40-man roster as well as the active one with Elias Diaz coming off the injured list Sunday. Montero was ineffective to say the least in 2024 with a .205 average and .571 OPS while providing no defensive value whatsoever. It’s possible a team will put a claim in on Montero hoping to unlock his upside, but it’d be a mistake to do the same on fantasy rosters.
  • COL Right Fielder #19
Charlie Blackmon (hamstring) is not in the Rockies’ lineup on Thursday against the Dodgers.
It’s unfortunate timing for Blackmon, who was hitting over .300 over his last two weeks but now finds himself battling an injury during a week in which the Rockies will play all their games at home. For fantasy managers who picked Blackmon up, it’s OK to move on from him in shallower formats since it’s not a given he returns on Friday. Elehuris Montero will DH and hit fifth on Thursday.

Elehuris Montero doubled, singled and drove in three runs Monday in leading the Rockies to a 5-4 win over the Padres.
This is big for Montero, who was on the bench in favor of Hunter Goodman the previous two days. He was hitting .156 this month, leaving him with an ugly .203/.250/.280 line for the year and putting him in danger of being DFA’d when the Rockies get Kris Bryant and Nolan Jones back from the IL. Tonight, though, will probably get him another week’s worth of starts.
  • COL Third Baseman #44
Elehuris Montero is not in the lineup against the Rangers on Sunday.
Montero has been awful thus far in 2024, and he’s hit just .161 with a .381 OPS in the month of May. Hunter Goodman is playing first base and hitting eighth while Montero retreats to the bench.
  • COL Third Baseman #44
Elehuris Montero connected on a two-run homer against the Padres on Thursday.
Montero blasted his first homer of the season with a two-run shot off Randy Vasquez. The 25-year-old has not been a useable fantasy option over the first month of the season, as even with the roundtripper he’s slashing an unhealthy .236/.288/.306 over 73 at-bats.
  • COL Third Baseman #44
Elehuris Montero finished 0-for-3 with a strikeout versus the Rockies on Monday.
In spite of a greatly reduced strikeout rate, Montero hasn’t experienced any success in the early going, having hit .210/.250/.226 in 68 plate appearances. If he doesn’t pick it up, there’s the chance the Rockies could DFA him after Kris Bryant returns, though it seems more likely that they’ll just send down Michael Toglia or Sean Bouchard. They still might want to try Hunter Goodman in Montero’s place later.
  • COL Third Baseman #23
Kris Bryant (back) remains out of the lineup on Monday against the Phillies.
Bryan exited Saturday’s game with back tightness and has now missed two straight games. There is no indication of whether or not the team will eventually place him on the IL, but the 32-year-old has struggled to stay healthy for years now. Michael Toglia will be starting in right field in his place as Elehuris Montero continues to get every day at-bats at first base.
