David Eckstein was given the day off Saturday after being hit in the chest with a Carlos Zambrano pitch Friday night.

Edgar Gonzalez replaced him last night and is likely to get the nod at second base again on Saturday evening. Eckstein is considered day-to-day.

Edgar Gonzalez was released from the hospital Sunday, but he’ll go on the DL after getting hit in the head by a Jason Hammel pitch on Saturday.

Gonzalez is believed to have suffered a concussion, but no fractures were found. Oscar Salazar figures to replace him as the Padres’ primary second baseman until David Eckstein returns.

Edgar Gonzalez departed Saturday night’s game on a medical cart after being nailed in the head with a pitch.

Gonzalez looked dazed as trainers transported him off the field. We’ll go ahead and guess he suffered a fairly severe concussion. A trip to the disabled list is highly probable.

Padres placed infielder Edgar Gonzalez on the 15-day day disabled list, retroactive to July 19, with a concussion.

Gonzalez was nailed in the head with a pitch Saturday night and required a cart to pull him off the field. He spent a night in the hospital and could need more than the allotted two weeks to get right mentally.

Gonzalez has been out since July 19 with post-concussion symptoms, including a long bout with vertigo. He was batting .190 with four homers and 12 runs batted in before the sudden injury.
