Mets sent INF/OF Eddy Alvarez outright to Triple-A Syracuse.
Alvarez was designated for assignment earlier this week and cleared waivers. The Mets acquired the utility man from the Red Sox in September, which was only allowed because Alvarez was on a minor league deal at the time. He has the option to refuse the outright assignment and become a free agent, which he’ll almost certainly do.
  • NYM Second Baseman #26
Mets designated INF/OF Eddy Alvarez for assignment.
Alvarez was acquired from the Red Sox in September to serve as a platoon man for the final month, and did a solid job. The 34-year-old was ineligible for the postseason because the team acquired him after August 31. Max Kranick had his contract selected in the corresponding move.

Mets selected the contract of INF/OF Eddy Alvarez from Triple-A Syracuse
The 34-year-old Alvarez, acquired from the Red Sox earlier today, is joining the major league team after all, though it’ll likely be in a bit role. It’ll be the utilityman’s first major league action since 2022. He’s hit .183/.262/.262 in 142 career major league plate appearances.
  • NYM Second Baseman #67

The 34-year-old has been in the minor leagues all season, and the Mets immediately assigned him to Triple-A Syracuse. The versatile infielder has played 3B, SS, 2B, LF, CF, RF, and pitcher this season while hitting 18 home runs and stealing 18 bases. He could be added insurance for the Mets with Jeff McNeil out for the season.
  • BOS Second Baseman #67
Eddy Alvarez had three homers, including a grand slam, for Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
The veteran had two shots at a fourth, and his seventh-inning flyball actually went a few feet further than his previous homer before being hauled in 377 feet deep. Alvarez, best known as a Summer and Winter Olympics medalist (baseball and short track speed skating), hasn’t played in the majors this season. He’s hit .249/.348/.467 with 18 homers for Worcester.
  • BOS Shortstop #37
Red Sox re-signed INF Eddy Alvarez to a minor league contract.
A two-time Olympic medalist, Alvarez latched on with Boston back in late July, and will return for the 2024 campaign as extra organizational depth. The 33-year-old veteran infielder has gotten into 50 big league games during his career between the Marlins and Dodgers.
  • BOS Third Baseman #37
Red Sox signed INF/OF Eddy Alvarez to a minor league contract.
Alvarez, 33, was recently let go by the Brewers after hitting .283/.397/.473 for Triple-A Nashville. The two-time Olympic medalist could offer depth if the Red Sox opt to trade veterans.
  • HOU First Baseman #28
Brewers reassigned 1B Jon Singleton, INF’s Josh VanMeter, Eddy Alvarez and Andruw Monasterio and OF Skye Bolt to minor league camp.
There are some notable names with big league experience among the latest round of Brewers’ cuts including Singleton, VanMeter, Alvarez and Bolt. The quartet could wind up finding themselves in Milwaukee at some point this year, but will open the regular season at Triple-A Nashville.

  • FA Second Baseman #26
