The Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball announced that they have re-signed right-hander Drew VerHagen to a one-year contract.
The 34-year-old hurler signed on with the Ham Fighters prior to the 2024 campaign and went on to post a 3.09 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and an 82/22 K/BB ratio over 96 innings in his 20 appearances. He then declined his player option and explored the open market before deciding that a return there was in his best interests.

Drew VerHagen has signed with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.
It’s a return to Japan for VeHagen, who spent two seasons overseas pitching for the Fighters from 2020-2021, before spending the last two years wirh the Cardinals. The 33-year-old righty made a career-high 60 relief appearances this past season for St. Louis, finishing with a serviceable 3.98 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 60/26 K/BB ratio across 61 innings of work.

Asked to protect a one-run lead in the ninth, Drew VerHagen gave up a go-ahead two-run homer Saturday against the Pirates.
We’re not saying that the Cardinals were trying to lose, but if they were... To be fair, the Cards weren’t going to use Ryan Helsley for a second straight day after he just came off the IL on Friday, and JoJo Romero was also unavailable after throwing 35 pitches on Friday. They could have asked for more than an inning out of Giovanny Gallegos after he had gone a week without pitching, but they chose not to. It would have been VerHagen’s first career save had he converted it. Alas, he hit the second batter he faced and then gave up his eighth homer in 51 1/3 innings this season.

Cardinals activated RHP Drew VerHagen from the 15-day injured list.
The 32-year-old hurler looked sharp on a recent minor league rehab assignment at Double-A Springfield and will return to a middle relief role with the big league club. VerHagen has posted a 4.78 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and a 38/18 K/BB ratio across 37 2/3 innings on the season.

Drew VerHagen (hip) felt good coming out of a rehab appearance Thursday with Double-A Springfield.
VerHagen allowed one run on one hit with a strikeout over one inning of work Thursday. He’s been out since the start of July with a right hip impingement, but there’s a chance he could return from the IL this weekend.

Cardinals placed RHP Drew VerHagen on the 15-day injured list with a right hip impingement.
Yikes. VerHagen suffered through right hip pain before undergoing surgery last August. JoJo Romero was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding transaction.

Drew VerHagen told reporters on Monday that he pitched through pain last season in his Cardinals debut.
VerHagen admitted that he tried to pitch through hip and shoulder injuries last season and it certainly adversely impacted his on-field performance. The 32-year-old right-hander posted a lackluster 6.65 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and 18/14 K/BB ratio across 21 2/2 innings (19 appearances) before undergoing season-ending hip surgery in early August. He’s expected to be fully healthy entering spring training and could be poised for a nice bounce-back season, if he avoids the injured list.
