Carlton elected free agency after being outrighted off the Padres’ 40-man roster last week, but the two sides were able to hammer out a new deal. The 28-year-old appeared in 11 games with the Padres this season before going down with right elbow inflammation at the start of July.

Carlton will likely wind up electing free agency following his removal from San Diego’s 40-man roster. The 28-year-old righty made a career-high 11 relief appearances for the Padres this past season before landing on the shelf with right elbow inflammation.

Nothing has changed in the prognosis for Carlton — who has been sidelined since early July with right elbow inflammation — this was merely done as a procedural move to free up a spot on the Padres’ 40-man roster for Ben Gamel. Carlton will be eligible to return in early September, but there’s still no word whether or not he’ll be ready by then.

Carlton heads to the injured list just a few days after being brought up from Triple-A El Paso. No word yet on how long he’ll wind up being sidelined.

With Steven Wilson (pectorals) landing on the injured list prior to Tuesday’s game, Carlton will get another opportunity to work out of the big league bullpen. The 27-year-old hurler has registered a 4.24 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and a 15/6 K/BB ratio across 17 innings with the Padres this season.

The 27-year-old right-hander gives the Padres some extra organizational relief depth and could factor into their bullpen mix next season.
