Tapia made San Diego’s season-opening roster and pitched to a respectable 3.57 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 14/12 K/BB ratio across 17 2/3 innings (15 appearances) prior to being ousted from the club’s 40-man roster back in late July. The hard-throwing righty reliever might be able to latch on somewhere this offseason on a minor league pact with an invitation to spring training.

Tapia went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment last week and will presumably stick around with San Diego as extra relief depth.

Tapia was demoted to Triple-A earlier this month after posting a 3.57 ERA in 17 2/3 innings for the Padres. He’s always had a big arm, so he might get claimed on waivers.

Tapia heads back to the minors with the Padres bringing up a couple fresh arms ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Angels.

He’ll take the place of Pedro Avila in the Padres’ bullpen. The 31-year-old right-hander has already made 14 appearances for the Padres this season, posting a 2.60 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and a 14/12 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 frames. He’ll be utilized in the middle innings.

Tapia has been shipped back to the minors with right-hander Luis García returning to San Diego’s relief mix ahead of Saturday’s showdown at Coors Field against the Rockies. The hard-throwing 31-year-old righty has posted a strong 2.60 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 14/12 K/BB ratio across 17 1/3 innings (14 appearances) this season.

Tapia will be available out of San Diego’s bullpen for Saturday’s game against the Yankees with Luis García (oblique) landing on the injured list. The hard-throwing 31-year-old journeyman holds a solid 3.18 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 12/7 K/BB ratio across 11 1/3 innings (10 appearances) this season in the majors.

The 31-year-old posted a 3.18 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and two saves ratio across 10 appearances with the Padres but will head to Triple-A as Ryan Weathers returns to make a start against the Dodgers.

Tapia came on with the Padres leading by three runs in the eighth inning and retired the Reds in order. After the Padres tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning, Padres’ skipper Bob Melvin sent Tapia back out there for the ninth, where he once again retired all three hitters that he faced. He notched a pair of strikeouts in his two innings of work and now boasts a 3.48 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and an 11/6 K/BB ratio across 10 1/3 innings on the season to go along with his two saves.

The 31-year-old hurler has made seven appearances with the Padres already this season -- posting a 4.32 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and a 9/6 K/BB ratio across 8 1/3 innings. He’ll function in a middle relief role for the Padres.
