Pirates optioned C Jason Delay to Triple-A Indianapolis; reassigned 1B Darick Hall, INF/OF Nick Solak, SS Alika Williams, C Abrahan Gutierrez, INF/OF Matt Gorski, OF Bryce Johnson and RHP Yohan Ramírez to minor league camp.
No surprises here as Pittsburgh pares down its spring roster to just 42 players. The decision to jettison Delay leaves some combination of Joey Bart, Henry Davis and Endy Rodríguez as the likely season-opening catching mix behind the plate.
  • PIT 1st Baseman #45
Darick Hall hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth as the Pirates beat the Yankees 4-3 on Sunday.
Hall is just 4-for-21 this spring, but three of his hits have left the yard. D.J. Stewart has taken over as the favorite in Pittsburgh to step in Spencer Horwitz’s replacement at first base at the beginning of the season, but Hall still has a shot. The two have essentially the same OPS — .880 for Hall, .878 for Stewart.
  • PIT 1st Baseman #24
Pirates signed 1B Darick Hall to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Hall provides Pittsburgh with some extra cold corner depth at Triple-A Indianapolis entering next season behind newly acquired starter Spencer Horwitz. The 29-year-old slugger has put up some big-time numbers in the upper minors but hasn’t been able to establish himself at the highest level, getting into 59 contests for the Phillies from 2022-2023. He spent all of last year at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, batting .236/.320/.387 with 16 round-trippers and two steals in 488 plate appearances.
  • PHI 1st Baseman #24
Phillies sent 1B Darick Hall outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Hall went unclaimed on waivers last week after being designated for assignment and will remain with the Phillies back at Triple-A Lehigh Valley for now. The 29-year-old was unable to break into the majors last year due to a thumb injury that cost him two months while Bryce Harper was also on the shelf, and he hasn’t appeared in the big leagues at all this season.
  • PHI 1st Baseman #24
Phillies designated INF Darick Hall for assignment.
The 29-year-old slugger has had an underwhelming season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley — hitting .248/.324/.402 with 12 homers, 56 RBI and an 81/33 K/BB ratio over 349 plate appearances. He has had some flashes of success at the big-league level, so there’s a chance that he could pique another team’s interest on waivers.
  • PHI Starting Pitcher #49
The Phillies optioned LHP Kolby Allard, RHP Max Castillo and INFs Rodolfo Castro and Darick Hall to Triple-A Lehigh; Reassigned RHPs Austin Brice and Ricardo Pinto and C Cody Roberts to minor league camp.
The former first-round pick by the Braves will be used as a depth piece for the Phillies’ pitching this season. He was limited last season due to a shoulder injury, but made three starts and one relief appearance for Atlanta, amassing a 6.57 ERA in 12 1/3 innings. Allard tossed 5 2/3 innings of spring ball and allowed two earned runs on six hits.
  • PHI 1st Baseman #24
Darick Hall hit his first spring homer Monday against the Red Sox.
It doesn’t seem like the Phillies have any intention of using Kyle Schwarber in left field this year, so there’s simply no place for Hall on the team as a backup first baseman and DH. There’s a case for him as a potentially solid DH elsewhere, but he has options and the Phillies are under no pressure to move him. The 28-year-old struggled during his brief stints in the majors last season, but he hit .313/.397/.544 with 18 homers in 76 games in the minors.
  • PHI 1st Baseman #24
Phillies optioned 1B Darick Hall to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Hall has been shipped back to the minors following Thursday’s contest against the Brewers. The 27-year-old slugger hit just .139 (5-for-36) with one homer and two RBI in 12 games since returning from the injured list back on July 2.
  • PHI 1st Baseman #24
Darick Hall is on the bench against a right-hander Wednesday for the first time since being recalled from Triple-A.
This was bound to happen some once Bryce Harper started playing first base, but Harper is still DHing today. Instead, the Phillies picked Edmundo Sosa over Hall, with Alec Bohm moving from third to first. Hall is just 5-for-32 with one homer and a 14/1 K/BB ratio since returning from the minors.
  • PHI 1st Baseman #24
Darick Hall finally got on the board Thursday, hitting his first homer of the year in the Phillies’ 3-1 win over the Rays.
The Phillies prevailed in 11 after RBI singles from Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner. Hall’s homer off Jake Diekman was also his first versus a lefty in the majors; a platoon player, he’s had just 20 career at-bats versus southpaws. All nine of his homers last year came off righties. Hall might have been a 25-homer threat this year if not for the broken thumb he suffered in the sixth game of the season. He’s getting an opportunity now, but it remains to be seen how much he’ll play after Bryce Harper begins to get starts at first base.
