Danny Jansen hit a solo homer in an extra-inning loss to the Yankees on Thursday.
Jansen provided the only run of the game for the Red Sox with a solo homer off Nestor Cortes to tie the score at 1-1 in the fifth. Jansen also drew a walk, and it’s helped push his line with the Red Sox to a still unappealing .197/.319/.295.
  • BOS First Baseman #36
Triston Casas is not in the lineup for the Red Sox on Monday against the Orioles.
With the Red Sox facing left-hander Cade Povich, it will be Connor Wong starting at first base with Danny Jansen catching. Tyler O’Neill will also slide to DH with Rob Refsnyder moving to right field. At some point, the Red Sox are going to need to trust Casas against lefties. Perhaps this is because he’s still not 100 percent after his rib injury, but the Red Sox are quickly falling out of the playoff race and should be fielding their best lineup each and every game. It’s hard to believe Casas doesn’t belong in that case.

Danny Jansen is starting behind the dish on Monday against the Blue Jays.
The Red Sox had to do it. Since this is a continuation of a game from earlier in the season when Danny Jansen was on the Blue Jays, the 29-year-old will now become the first player in MLB history to appear for two teams in the same game. In fact, Jansen is actually set to hit for the Blue Jays when the game resumes which means, for a brief moment, Jansen will be both hitting and catching at the same time in the same game.
  • BOS Catcher #12
Connor Wong is at first base and batting fifth for Saturday’s contest against the Rangers.
Fresh off an impressive four-hit performance during Friday evening’s series opener, Wong gets the nod at the cold corner on Saturday night with newly-acquired Danny Jansen handling the catching duties. It’s his first career start anywhere besides catcher in his big league career. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Wong, who is having a breakout season at the plate so far, get a few chances at first base against left-handed pitching over the final two months.
  • BOS Catcher #9
Red Sox acquired C Danny Jansen from the Blue Jays for INF Cutter Coffey, INF Eddinson Paulino and RHP Gilberto Batista.
The Blue Jays’ fire sale continues. The 29-year-old backstop is in his final season of arbitration eligibility, so the move makes plenty of sense on the Jays’ end. This season, Jansen has hit just .212/.303/.369 with six homers and 18 RBI in 198 at-bats. He’s an extreme pull hitter though and should benefit from his move to the Red Sox and the Green Monster in left field. He makes for a nice upgrade over Reese McGuire as the team’s backup catcher behind Connor Wong.
  • BOS Third Baseman
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that the Blue Jays will acquire three prospects from the Red Sox in their trade for Danny Jansen.
Cutter Coffey is one of the prospects that will be joining the Jays in the deal. The 20-year-old shortstop was a second-round selection from the 2022 draft class. He has been excelling at High-A Greenville this season and possesses a high ceiling. No word on the other two prospects yet, but the deal should be announced shortly.
  • TOR Catcher #9
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Red Sox are in serious discussions to acquire catcher Danny Jansen from the Blue Jays.
No word yet on what the Jays would get in a potential return package, but it sounds like the 29-year-old backstop could be on the move shortly. If the Red Sox are successful in acquiring Jansen, it seems like Reese McGuire would be the odd man out there in their catching mix.
  • TOR Catcher #9
Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Cubs have interest in Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen.
The Cubs have gotten very little production from the catching position, and while they do have a Top 100 prospect currently in Triple-A in Moises Ballesteros, they likely would prefer not to rely on a 21-year-old to help get the team into the postseason. The Blue Jays are going to be the subject of plenty of trade rumors over the next two-plus weeks, and Jansen — who will be a free agent at the end of the year — makes sense for anyone who needs a boost behind the plate.
  • TOR Catcher #15
Blue Jays optioned C Brian Serven to Triple-A Buffalo.
Serven was called up on Monday with Danny Jansen on the paternity list. He made one start during his time up and will now return to Triple-A.
  • TOR Catcher #9
Blue Jays returned Danny Jansen from the paternity list.
Jansen and his wife welcomed a baby girl this week, so congrats to both of them. He will return to the Blue Jays active roster but is not in the lineup on Thursday.
