Connor Wong (shoulder) could play in his first spring training game over the weekend.
Wong has been sidelined with a sore shoulder, but it appears to be more precautionary than serious injury. The 28-year-old will get live at-bats in a bullpen session Thursday and could see his first Grapefruit League action Friday. He should be ready to roll for the regular season.

Mass Live’s Chris Cotillo reported that Connor Wong spent the entire offseason adding weight and working on his defense.
Wong had a solid season offensively for Boston in 2024, hitting .280 with 13 homers, 24 doubles, and a .758 OPS while cutting his strikeout rate down from 33.3 percent in 2023 to 23.4 percent in 2024. However, he also wore down as the season went on, posting just a .696 OPS in the second half, compared to a .809 OPS in the first half. Wong believes the added weight will help him “be a little more physical, a little more durable” while still moving “the same way I have in the past.” He also worked with new Red Sox catching instructor Packer Guinn on “Receiving, blocking, the whole thing, really. We’ve changed some of the setup.” Wong graded as a poor blocker and framer in 2024, so any meaningful improvement in his defense would be huge for Boston and Wong’s playing time in 2025.
  • BOS First Baseman #36
The Athletic’s Jim Bowden reported that the Red Sox could include Triston Casas in a trade package for White Sox LHP Garrett Crochet.
While Bowden is speculating on the exact trade package the Red Sox would offer for Crochet, it’s interesting to note his mention of Casas since there has been lots of reporting this offseason that the Red Sox are looking to move Rafael Devers off of third base. If the Red Sox were to sign a third baseman and move Devers to first base then they may view Casas as a palatable trade option if it nets them a potential difference-making starter like Crochet. Bowden suggested that “a package of Casas, Wilyer Abreu, and Connor Wong probably gets close to landing Crochet. The Red Sox could then replace Abreu with prospect Roman Anthony in right field, replace Wong with Kyle Teel at catcher.”
  • BOS Catcher #33
Red Sox signed C Seby Zavala to a minor league contract.
Zavala fortifies Boston’s catching depth behind Connor Wong. He makes sense as a temporary stopgap until top prospect Kyle Teel is ready to ascend to the big leagues at some point next year. The 31-year-old journeyman backstop holds a lifetime .613 OPS in 194 contests in the majors since 2019.

Triston Casas is not in the lineup for the Red Sox on Monday against the Orioles.
With the Red Sox facing left-hander Cade Povich, it will be Connor Wong starting at first base with Danny Jansen catching. Tyler O’Neill will also slide to DH with Rob Refsnyder moving to right field. At some point, the Red Sox are going to need to trust Casas against lefties. Perhaps this is because he’s still not 100 percent after his rib injury, but the Red Sox are quickly falling out of the playoff race and should be fielding their best lineup each and every game. It’s hard to believe Casas doesn’t belong in that case.
  • BOS Catcher #12
Connor Wong went 3-for-4 with a home run in a loss to the White Sox on Sunday.
Wong was the vast majority of the Red Sox offense on Sunday. The home run was his 13th of the season and he now has 48 RBI to go along with a solid .286/.338/.436 slash line. He has been a fine catcher for the Red Sox for both real-life and fantasy purposes.
  • BOS Catcher #12
Connor Wong went 2-for-3 with a homer, double and two RBI on Friday night, propelling the Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Tigers.
Wong smacked a run-scoring double off of Casey Mize in the fourth inning that extended the Red Sox’ early advantage to 3-0. He then clobbered a two-out, 368-foot solo shot off of Mize in the sixth inning that made it 4-0. With his two-hit effort, Wong is now slashing .285/.339/.432 with 12 homers and 46 RBI on the season.
  • BOS Catcher #12
Connor Wong went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBI in a win over the Rangers.
The catcher broke open the game with a three-run shot in the fifth inning. It was his 11th home run of the season to go along with an impressive .295/.352/.441 slash line. He hits regularly in the middle of the order and is firmly on the radar in one-catcher formats. In fact, he’s the best player the Red Sox got back from the Dodgers in the Mookie Betts trade.
  • BOS Catcher #12
Connor Wong is at first base and batting fifth for Saturday’s contest against the Rangers.
Fresh off an impressive four-hit performance during Friday evening’s series opener, Wong gets the nod at the cold corner on Saturday night with newly-acquired Danny Jansen handling the catching duties. It’s his first career start anywhere besides catcher in his big league career. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Wong, who is having a breakout season at the plate so far, get a few chances at first base against left-handed pitching over the final two months.
  • BOS Catcher #12
Connor Wong singled four times in five at-bats and scored three runs Friday against the Rangers.
Wong has started five of six games since the Red Sox acquired Danny Jansen, so it doesn’t look like the backup catcher upgrade will affect his value much. The Red Sox will likely use both at the same time on occasion, particularly against lefties.
