Gillispie

Gillispie passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment earlier this week. The 27-year-old righty was claimed off waivers last month from the Marlins and has yet to pitch for Minnesota in the big leagues.

Gillispie was claimed off waivers from the Marlins a month ago and immediately optioned to Triple-A St. Paul, where he had a 14.49 ERA in four starts. One imagines he’ll clear waivers this time around.

Gillispie, who is 0-3 with an 8.65 ERA in six major league starts this season, was DFA’d by the Marlins last week. His lack of velocity leaves him with a low ceiling, but he can eat some innings as a swingman if needed.

The Marlins needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster for the promotion of Robinson Pina on Thursday and unfortunately for Gillispie he was the odd man out this time around. The 27-year-old hurler has gone 0-3 with an 8.65 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and a 23/11 K/BB ratio over 26 innings in six appearances with the Marlins this season. He could potentially pique another team’s interest on waivers.

Gillispie heads back to the minors after spending a couple days in Miami’s bullpen. The 27-year-old righty is the corresponding move to get talented starter Eury Pérez back from the injured list for Monday’s start against the Pirates.

Gillispie gave up six runs in the first and another in the second before mercifully exiting. The 27-year-old gave up back-to-back homers in the first inning and a pair of two-run doubles in that frame. Gillispie is just not good enough to be a rotation option, and his 8.65 ERA tells that story well. He gets the A’s in their Triple-A ballpark next weekend.

Gillispie gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out three. His ERA sits at 6.75 on the year after allowing four runs in five innings against the Phillies. Gillispie’s grip on his spot in the rotation seems tenuous at best. He’s set to face the Mariners on the road next weekend, but isn’t a streaming option despite the good matchup.

Gillispie dropped to 0-2 with a 6.63 ERA through four starts. He’ll likely keep his spot for now and face the Phillies this weekend, but he’s the obvious candidate to be dropped from the Marlins rotation when Ryan Weathers returns.
