Twins designated LHP Cole Irvin for assignmment.
The Twins threw Irvin into big situations twice after picking up off waivers from the Orioles this month, and it didn’t work out either time. Really, though, it didn’t seem like great judgment using him that way in the first place. He allowed five runs in 3 2/3 innings in his brief Twins career.
  • MIN Relief Pitcher #68
Twins designated RHP Randy Dobnak for assignment.
The Twins needed to make room on the 40-man roster for Cole Irvin, so they chose to move on from Dobnak. The 29-year-old posted a 5.87 ERA in 7 2/3 innings out of the bullpen for the Twins in 2024. He could go unclaimed and return to the Twins’ minor league system.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #19
Twins claimed LHP Cole Irvin off waivers from the Orioles.
Irvin was designated for assignment yesterday after posting a 4.86 ERA in 16 starts and nine relief appearances on the season. The Twins could opt to use him in that same swingman role or perhaps insert him into the starting rotation with rookies David Festa and Zebby Matthews battling consistency issues. We’ll need to see how this pans out over the next few days. Randy Dobnak was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Irvin.

Orioles designated LHP Cole Irvin for assignment.
Irvin did fine in a couple of starts last month with Zach Eflin on the IL, but the Orioles had used him just twice in relief since Eflin was activated. He has a 4.86 ERA in 16 starts and nine relief appearances on the season. It’s possible someone will put in a claim with the idea of having him around as a swingman next year.

Cole Irvin gave up two runs over 4 1/3 innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Dodgers.
To his credit, Irvin managed to hold his own and spare Baltimore’s bullpen from having to soak up even more innings on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium. He struck out three and also issued a pair of walks. The 30-year-old southpaw figures to lose his spot in Baltimore’s starting rotation once Zach Eflin (shoulder) is ready to come off the injured list at some point in early September. He’s in line to take the ball on Sunday against the Rockies at Coors Field. He should continue to be ignored in all fantasy formats until further notice.
  • BAL Starting Pitcher #28
Orioles optioned LHP Trevor Rogers to Triple-A Norfolk.
The 2024 trade deadline couldn’t have gone much worse for the Orioles. One starter they acquired, Zach Eflin, is now hurt, and Rogers has been sent to the minors after posting a 7.11 ERA across four starts with a 12:10 K:BB ratio in 19 innings. Rogers seemed like a clear regression candidate after overperforming his peripherals during the early part of the summer, but the Orioles will have him under contract for a couple more years to try and make the necessary adjustments to make him a solid MLB starter again. Matt Bowman was called up in a corresponding move, and it appears that Cole Irvin and Cade Povich will remain in the Orioles’ rotation moving forward.

Cole Irvin was charged with two runs over 4 1/3 innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Mets.
Irvin took the ball on Wednesday afternoon in an unexpected spot start after Zach Eflin hit the injured list earlier this week with a shoulder ailment. The 30-year-old southpaw gave up five hits, including a third-inning solo shot to Mark Vientos and managed to work into the fifth inning to spare Baltimore’s bullpen. He struck out two and also issued a pair of walks. He’s unlikely to make another start for the Orioles, but that remains to be seen.

Orioles selected the contract of LHP Cole Irvin from Triple-A Norfolk.
Baltimore’s injuries have led to another chance in the rotation for Irvin, who will start today against the Mets. He’s actually 6-4 with a 4.06 ERA in 14 starts for the Orioles this season, but he was lit up in his last few starts before being sent to the bullpen last month. His two starts for Norfolk saw him give up three runs and walk six in 6 2/3 innings. He doesn’t seem worth taking a chance on in fantasy leagues at the moment.
  • BAL Starting Pitcher #19
Cole Irvin will start on Wednesday against the Mets.
Irvin will have to be added back to Baltimore’s 40-man roster. It’s somewhat of a surprise since the Orioles seemed likely to hand the ball to ace Corbin Burnes on normal rest to fill in for an injured Zach Eflin (shoulder).
  • BAL Starting Pitcher #19
Orioles sent LHP Cole Irvin outright to Triple-A Norfolk.
The 30-year-old southpaw was jettisoned off of the Orioles’ 40-man roster following their trade deadline acquisition of Trevor Rogers. He passed through waivers unclaimed though and will continue to serve as extra rotation depth at the Triple-A level until he’s needed once more.
