Phillies optioned OF Cal Stevenson and RHP Kyle Tyler to Triple-A Lehigh Valley; reassigned INF Christian Arroyo, OF Oscar Mercado, RHP Nabil Crismatt and C Josh Breaux to minor league camp.
The moves leave Kody Clemens and Buddy Kennedy fighting for the final spot on Philadelphia’s season-opening bench. There are some notable names here, but Stevenson, Arroyo and Mercado are merely emergency depth at this stage of their respective careers.
  • PHI 2nd Baseman #39
Phillies signed INF Christian Arroyo to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Arroyo spent 2024 in Triple-A with the Brewers and hit .237/.305/.360. He last appeared in the big leagues in 2023 and is a career .252/.299/.394 hitter in 992 plate appearances. He’s a long shot to break camp with the Phillies.
  • MIL 2nd Baseman #39
Brewers signed INF Christian Arroyo to a minor league deal, according to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy.
The deal is a $1.5 million base salary that includes $500K in incentives, so the Brewers will likely be looking at Arroyo as a versatile bench bat who can play all over the field, but he will need to earn a spot in spring training. Arroyo spent his last four seasons in Boston, where they played primary 2B and SS but was also used in the outfield for a brief stretch. While he did flash solid contact skills at times, he also hit just .241/.268/.369 over 206 plate appearances last season and was designated for assignment over the summer.
  • FA 3rd Baseman #39
Christian Arroyo has elected free agency.
Arroyo was bumped off the 40-man roster back in August and passed through waivers unclaimed. The 28-year-old hit just .241/.268/.369 over 206 plate appearances with the Red Sox this past season and will likely have to settle for a spring training invite this offseason.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #39
Red Sox sent INF Christian Arroyo outright to Triple-A Worcester.
Arroyo would have to sacrifice roughly $2 million left on his contract to elect free agency, so he’s going to remain with the Red Sox’ organization at Triple-A Worcester for the remainder of the year. The 28-year-old infielder went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment last Friday.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #39
Red Sox designated INF Christian Arroyo for assignment.
In turn, the Red Sox have promoted the recently-acquired Luis Urías to the active roster. Arroyo, 28, has seen significant time at second base this season while hitting just .241/.268/.369 over 206 plate appearances. Urías is now primed to take over second base duties.
  • BOS 2nd Baseman #39
Christian Arroyo went 1-for-4 with an RBI on Tuesday in his return to the Red Sox’ lineup.
Arroyo was back in Boston’s lineup for Tuesday’s series opener against the Braves following a one-game absence due to right thumb soreness. He’ll continue to factor in the Red Sox’ second base mix, even after Trevor Story returns from the injured list to take over at shortstop.
  • BOS 2nd Baseman #39
Christian Arroyo was held out of the Red Sox’ starting lineup on Sunday due to soreness in his right thumb.
Red Sox’ skipper Alex Cora noted that Arroyo suffered the injury during the team’s series in Oakland, which is why he has been held out of the lineup lately. He’s considered day-to-day. Enrique Hernandez will start in his place at second base and will bat eighth against Carlos Carrasco and the Mets on Sunday evening.
  • PHI 2nd Baseman #39
Christian Arroyo went 4-for-4 with a solo homer and four RBI on Tuesday, powering the Red Sox to a 10-4 blowout victory over the Twins.
Arroyo, who wasn’t in Boston’s original lineup until Pablo Reyes was scratched due to right abdominal soreness, took righty Bailey Ober deep in the fourth inning for his third round-tripper of the season and also added a bases-clearing, three-run double in the seventh inning as well. It was the first five-hit performance of his career. Unreal.

  • PHI 2nd Baseman #39
Christian Arroyo went 2-for-4 and slugged a solo home run as the Red Sox fell to the Rockies in extra innings on Monday night in Boston.
Arroyo swatted a go-ahead 376-foot blast off of Brent Suter in the seventh inning that gave the Red Sox a 2-1 advantage. It would be short-lived though. Arroyo also doubled in the contest, collecting two of his club’s three total extra-base hits in the ballgame. With the two-hit attack, he’s now slashing .258/.289/.409 with two homers and 12 RBI on the year.
