Angels optioned INF Livan Soto to Triple-A Salt Lake; reassigned OF Willie Calhoun and C Caleb Hamilton to minor league camp.
Soto was scooped up from the Orioles last month after being removed from Los Angeles’ 40-man roster earlier in the offseason. The 23-year-old infielder will open the season back in the upper minors as extra organizational depth.
  • LAA Catcher #77
Angels signed C Caleb Hamilton to a minor league deal.
The 29-year-old spent last season in the Red Sox minor league system but elected free agency at the end of the season. He’s generally regarded as a strong defensive catcher, but in his 480 Triple-A plate appearances he has a 30.8 percent strikeout rate and a13.3 percent walk rate. He’s hit 17 home runs over that time with a .199/.308/.369 slash line. He figures to serve as organizational depth.
  • BOS Catcher #77
Red Sox sent C Caleb Hamilton outright to Triple-A Worcester.
Caleb Hamilton was designated for assignment earlier this week when the Red Sox signed veteran Jorge Alfaro to a major league contract. The 28-year-old will remain with the team and serve as catching depth.
  • BOS Catcher #77
Red Sox designated C Caleb Hamilton for assignment.
With the Red Sox signing Jorge Alfaro to a big league contract on Thursday, they needed to free up a spot on both the active and 40-man rosters, and unfortunately that was at the expense of Hamilton. The 28-year-old went hitless in five at-bats during his time with the big league club.
  • Catcher #77
Red Sox selected the contract of C Caleb Hamilton from Triple-A Worcester.
Hamilton gets the call with Reese McGuire headed to the injured list due to an oblique injury. The 28-year-old appeared in 22 games with the Twins last year and was slashing .180/.285/.310 through 30 games in Triple-A this year. He’s not fantasy relevant.

  • Catcher #22
Reese McGuire left Wednesday’s game against the Twins with an apparent injury.
McGuire suffered an apparent hand injury on a swing during a sixth-inning at-bat and was immediately lifted from the contest. It’s a tough break for the Red Sox since they lost Jorge Alfaro earlier this month to the Rockies when he opted out of his minor league contract. They’ll presumably have to make a move to bring in some emergency depth -- most likely Triple-A backstop Caleb Hamilton -- if McGuire is going to wind up missing any time.

  • Red Sox reassigned C Ronaldo Hernández, C Caleb Hamilton and 1B/OF Daniel Palka to minor league camp.
No one here had a chance of making the Red Sox unless players started getting hurt. There’s still some hope that Hernández, 25, could emerge as a solid No. 2 catcher at some point, but he’s fourth or fifth on the depth chart at the moment.

  • Catcher #77
Red Sox sent C Caleb Hamilton outright to Triple-A Worcester.
Hamilton went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week. The 27-year-old backstop got into 22 games this past season for the Twins and was claimed off waivers last month by the Red Sox. He’ll provide Boston with some catching depth heading into next season.

  • Catcher #77
Red Sox designated C Caleb Hamilton for assignment.
As part of the purge to free up spots on the team’s 40-man roster on Tuesday, Hamilton was left out in the cold. The 27-year-old backstop had just been claimed off of waivers from the Twins back in October. There’s a decent chance that he will pass through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as depth for the Red Sox.

  • Catcher #77
Red Sox claimed C Caleb Hamilton off waivers from the Twins.
The 27-year-old finally broke through to the big leagues for the first time in 2022, but hit just .056 (1-for-18) with a homer and five runs scored in his limited action. He’ll add catching depth for the Red Sox. Abraham Almonte was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
