  • TEX Center Fielder #72
Rangers signed OF Michael Reed to a minor league contract.
Reed was a second-round pick of the Padres back in 2016, but never wound up panning out in San Diego. He’s had stops with the Athletics, Dodgers and Brewers over the last few years, but has yet to reach the big leagues. The 28-year-old will presumably open the 2024 campaign in the upper levels of Texas’ system waiting for a chance to reach the majors.
  • Left Fielder #72
Brewers signed OF Michael Reed to a minor league contract.
Reed, a former first-round pick back in 2016, spent last year with the Dodgers in the minor leagues and will get a shot with the Brewers now. The 28-year-old outfielder has yet to reach the majors.

  • Left Fielder #72
Dodgers signed OF Buddy Reed to a minor league contract.
Reed, a former first-round selection back in 2016, was released by the Athletics back in early May and has found a new opportunity with the Dodgers. The 27-year-old outfielder has yet to reach the majors.

  • Left Fielder #72
    Athletics released OF Buddy Reed.
Reed suffered a strained right quad during spring training and also got off to a slow start at Triple-A Las Vegas this season, slashing .196/.255/.196 with zero extra-base hits and one steal in 56 plate appearances across 20 games. The 27-year-old former second-round selection back in 2016 has yet to reach the majors.

  • OAK Shortstop #10
Athletics optioned INF Nick Allen, LHP Zach Logue and RHP Miguel Romero to Triple-A Las Vegas; reassigned LHP Aaron Brown, RHPs Ryan Castellani, Chester Pimentel and Austin Pruitt, INF Dermis Garcia and OF Buddy Reed to minor league camp.
The latest round of Athletics’ spring cuts includes a bit of a surprise in Allen, who has been outstanding so far this spring, and appeared to have a shot at making the Athletics’ Opening Day roster. The recent addition of veteran second baseman Jed Lowrie has apparently slammed that door shut. The 23-year-old middle infielder should get an opportunity at some point this season.

  • Left Fielder #72
Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that Buddy Reed (quad) is “going to be out for a little while.”
Reed is dealing with a right quad strain and the MRI results did not come back favorably. The young outfielder made a strong initial impression this spring but has since faded at the plate.

  • Left Fielder #72
Athletics OF prospect Buddy Reed is dealing with a right quad strain.
Reed underwent an MRI on Tuesday, and the Athletics are waiting on results. The 25-year-old has been one of the stars of the Cactus League both with the bat and the glove, and appeared to be a candidate to either making the Opening Day roster or be an early call-up for Oakland. Athletics manager Bob Melvin told reporters that Reed “could be out a while” so that’s no longer a likely outcome.

  • Left Fielder #72
Buddy Reed homered his second time in as many games Tuesday versus the Brewers.
Reed took Thomas Jankins just over the left field wall in the seventh inning for a go-ahead home run. The 25-year-old switch-hitter has wowed in the early going this spring, hitting a pair of home runs and also adding two outfield assists (one at home and one at third base). Reed is loaded with tools but hasn’t put them to use consistently in the minors. He’s still a long shot to make the Opening Day roster even after his hot start, but he’ll have a shot to debut in 2021.

  • Left Fielder #72
Athletics acquired OF Buddy Reed from the Padres as the player to be named later in the Jurickson Profar trade.
Oakland dealt Profar to San Diego earlier this month for catcher Austin Allen and a PTBNL. Reed is that PTBNL. The 24-year-old outfielder was a second-round pick in the 2016 MLB Draft out of the University of Florida and batted .228/.310/.388 with 14 home runs and 23 stolen bases over 121 games this past season at Double-A. He’s a terrific athlete but still has some work to do with his overall plate approach.
  • Left Fielder #72
Padres prospect Buddy Reed is believed to have suffered a concussion Sunday after colliding with teammate Josh Naylor while attempting to make a catch.
It’s being called a low-grade concussion, but either way, the Padres are going to be extra careful with him for now. There should be more clarity on his status in the coming days. Reed turns 24 in April and thrived at High-A last year before stumbling at the Double-A level.
