Red Sox reinstated RHPs Isaiah Campbell, Lucas Giolito, Liam Hendriks, Bryan Mata, and Garrett Whitlock, and LHP Chris Murphy from the 60-Day IL.
This was just a procedural move as today was the deadline for the Red Sox to move them onto the 40-man roster. There’s a chance each pitcher will be healthy for the start of the 2025 season. Hendriks, Whitlock, and Campbell all figure to have a good chance to open the season in the bullpen, and Giolito has a chance to be in the rotation early in the season.

Red Sox transferred RHP Bryan Mata to the 60-day injured list.
Mata goes to the 60-day injured list in order for Boston to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly acquired James Paxton.

Red Sox send Bryan Mata (hamstring) on rehab assignment to Double-A Portland.
Mata has been on the injured list all season as he recovers from a hamstring injury. He continues to progress in his rehab with the Red Sox moving him up to Double-A.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #79
Bryan Mata (hamstring) allowed one run over two innings in a rehab appearance Monday in the Gulf Coast league.
Mata has been on the injured list since the beginning of the season while recovering from a hamstring injury. The 25-year-old will likely need several more appearances before potentially joining Boston, and there’s no guarantee he’ll be on the roster even if healthy enough to compete.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #79
Red Sox placed RHP Bryan Mata on 15-day injured list, retroactive to March 25, with a right hamstring injury.
Mata is expected to be a part of the Red Sox bullpen this season and will likely return sometime in April. The 24-year-old has only pitched 110 innings since 2020 due to Tommy John surgery in 2021 and shoulder inflammation last season. He’ll need to show the Red Sox organization he can remain healthy if he plans on sticking around a while.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #79
Bryan Mata has been sidelined after suffering a right hamstring injury.
Mata has thrown just 110 innings since 2020 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2021 and battling shoulder inflammation in 2023. The 24-year-old is out of options, so he must make the club or be exposed to waivers.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #79
Red Sox prospect Bryan Mata, out since May with shoulder inflammation, is expected to resume pitching for Triple-A Worcester within the next week or so.
Mata would seem to be a prime candidate for an Arizona Fall League spot, if he shows he’s healthy. This is supposed to be Mata’s last option year, but the Red Sox might gain an extra option, based on all of the time he’s missed (he was out for all of 2021 after Tommy John surgery).
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #79
Red Sox prospect Bryan Mata was placed on the IL in Triple-A due to shoulder inflammation.
Mata has been off to a rough start in his second year back from Tommy John, posting a 5.61 ERA with 27 walks in 25 2/3 innings for Worcester. If he helps the Red Sox this year, it’ll probably be as a reliever after the All-Star break.

  • BOS Starting Pitcher #79
Red Sox optioned RHP Bryan Mata to Triple-A Worcester; reassigned LHP Ryan Sherriff to minor league camp.
The 23-year-old hurler was outstanding in Grapefruit League action this spring, hurling seven scoreless innings with a 1.00 WHIP and six strikeouts. He’ll begin the season at Triple-A Worcester but he should get an opportunity to debut with the big league club before the 2023 campaign is said and done.

  • BOS Starting Pitcher #79
Red Sox RHP Bryan Mata struck out eight over four scoreless innings Thursday for High-A Greenville.
Mata issued three walks, and gave up one hit. He was making his third start of the season, and he’s now worked seven innings while allowing just one run with a 13/5 K/BB ratio. The reason for the late start is that Mata is recovering from Tommy John surgery, and it caused him to miss the first half of the season along with all of 2021. There are three pitches that have flashed plus for Mata, and he generally is around the strike zone, although command will never be his strong suit. Mata has volatility because of the missed time and so-so command, but there’s no denying his ability to miss bats. He could help the Red Sox and fantasy managers by the end of 2023.
