The Guardians are planning on shifting Brayan Rocchio back to shortstop in spring training, with Gilbert Arias likely to resume moving around.
That’s probably the right plan. Rocchio played second, with Arias at short, after returning from the minors last July. Arias, though, just hasn’t looked like a big-league regular, and while Rocchio still has much to prove, too, he’s the more intriguing player at this point. The news suggests the Guardians could aim for a stopgap in second while waiting on 2024 first overall pick Travis Bazzana. Or perhaps Bazzana could have a shot of winning the job in spring training, even if his participation for Team Australia in the WBC probably won’t help there.

Brayan Rocchio hit a go-ahead solo homer in the eighth to help the Guardians to a 6-1 win over the Tigers on Wednesday in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series.
Rocchio came up huge again not long after his three-run homer against the Rangers on Sunday helped the Guardians clinch the division. This one might have been bigger, as it kept Cleveland’s season alive, although it’s worth noting that the Guardians scored four more runs in the eighth. Rocchio and Cleveland will play a winner-moves-on game Thursday against Detroit, with the victor earning a trip to play Seattle on Saturday.

Brayan Rocchio clobbered a walk-off three-run homer in the 10th inning on Sunday afternoon, powering the Guardians to a 9-8 victory over the Rangers and securing the top spot in the American League Central.
The Guardians entered their half of the 10th inning trailing 8-5, but they inched closer as Bo Naylor smacked an RBI double. Rocchio then etched his name into Guardians’ lore with his 380-foot walk-off blast off of Jose Corniell. He also had a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning that tied the game at five runs apiece and put the Guardians in position to win it in the 10th. The 24-year-old infielder finishes the season slashing .233/.290/.340 with five homers and 44 RBI in 383 plate appearances.

Gabriel Arias (wrist) was held out of the Guardians’ starting lineup for a third consecutive game on Thursday.
The 25-year-old infielder has been dealing with inflammation in his right wrist since he exited Monday’s series opener against the Royals. While they are taking things on a day-by-day basis for now, if things don’t improve by the weekend the Guardians may be forced to consider a backdated stint on the injured list. Brayan Rocchio will cover shortstop again on Thursday with Daniel Schneemann starting at second base against Stephen Kolek and the Royals.
  • CLE Shortstop #13
Gabriel Arias (wrist) is not in the starting lineup Wednesday against the Royals.
Arias left Monday’s game against Kansas City with inflammation in his right wrist, and he’ll miss at least one more game with the injury. Brayan Rocchio and Daniel Schneemann will make up the Cleveland middle-infield for Wednesdays tilt.
  • CLE Shortstop #13
Gabriel Arias (wrist) is out of the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Royals.
Brayan Rocchio takes over at shortstop after Arias made a precautionary exit from Monday’s series opener with right wrist inflammation. He’s presumably day-to-day heading into the final two games of the early-week series.
  • CLE Shortstop #13
Gabriel Arias (hand) remains out of the lineup for the fourth straight game on Tuesday against the Red Sox.
Arias remains stapled to Cleveland’s bench as he continues to recover from a right hand bruise after being drilled by a pitch last Friday. It’ll be Brayan Rocchio drawing his fourth consecutive start in his place. He remains day-to-day heading into Wednesday’s series finale at Fenway Park.

Gabriel Arias (hand) remains out of the lineup for the second straight game on Sunday against the Mariners.
Brayan Rocchio is filling in at shortstop for the second straight contest with Arias nursing a right hand contusion. X-rays came back negative after the 25-year-old infielder was drilled during Friday’s series opener. He’s presumably day-to-day heading into Monday’s showdown against the Red Sox.
  • CLE Shortstop #4
Brayan Rocchio hit a two-run homer in a win for the Guardians on Monday over the Diamondbacks.
Rocchio, 24, extended the Guardians’ lead to 3-0 with his two-run shot off Zac Gallen. The shortstop has been solid in August with a .312 average and .764 OPS, but is still slashing an unimpressive .237/.289/.348 during his 2025 campaign.
  • CLE Shortstop #4
Brayan Rocchio is not in the Guardians’ starting lineup for Friday night’s battle against the Tigers.
It looks to be just a routine night off for the 24-year-old infielder. Daniel Schneemann will slide over and cover the shortstop position in his absence while Angel Martinez will draw a start at second base and bat ninth against Tigers’ right-hander Reese Olson.
