Brenan Hanifee will open on Saturday against the Athletics.
Hanifee will take the ball as Detroit’s opener before giving way to rookie southpaw Brant Hurter, who has posted a solid 3.25 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 26/3 K/BB ratio across 27 2/3 innings (six appearances, one start) so far, for a bulk relief appearance. There’s definitely some streaming appeal here with Hurter, especially for fantasy managers in extremely deep leagues.
  • DET Starting Pitcher
Brant Hurter allowed one run in five innings as the bulk reliever and got the win in the Tigers’ 4-1 victory over the Red Sox on Sunday.
Hurter gave up six hits, walked none and struck out five. Hurter has recorded a win in each of his last three appearances, which consisted of one start and two relief outings. He has a 3.25 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 26 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings in six appearances for the Tigers. The 25-year-old left-hander is set to face the Athletics on the road next week.
  • DET Starting Pitcher
Brant Hurter picked up a victory over the Angels in his first big-league start on Tuesday, giving up two runs on four hits over his five frames.
The 25-year-old left-hander punched out four batters on the evening while issuing a pair of walks. The Angels scored a run in the opening inning as Taylor Ward smacked a leadoff double and scored on an RBI single by Nolan Schanuel. They added another in the fifth as Jo Adell tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly. Hurter got just four whiffs on 80 pitches in the ballgame, registering a CSW of 25 percent. He’ll carry an impressive 3.57 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and a 21/3 K/BB ratio (22 2/3 innings) into Sunday’s matchup against the Red Sox.
  • DET Starting Pitcher
Tigers’ manager A.J. Hinch confirmed after Sunday’s victory that Brant Hurter will work as a traditional starter on Tuesday against the Angels.
Hurter has worked exclusively as a bulk reliever in his four appearances with the Tigers — posting a 3.57 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and an impressive 17/1 K/BB ratio over 17 2/3 innings thus far. He has yet to throw more than 78 pitches in any of those outings though, which makes it somewhat unlikely that he’ll work deep enough to earn a victory on Tuesday.
  • DET Starting Pitcher
Brant Hurter pitched well in a bulk role for the Tigers on Friday night, giving up just two runs on four hits over six innings against the Yankees.
Hurter struck out five batters on the night and didn’t walk a batter. The 25-year-old southpaw actually came on after two pitchers worked for the Tigers, coming on in the fourth inning and finishing the ballgame. Both of the runs that he allowed came on solo homers off the bat of Oswald Peraza and Aaron Judge. Hurter generated nine swings and misses on 78 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 28 percent. He’ll carry a 3.21 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and a 13/1 K/BB ratio (14 innings) into Thursday’s outing against the Cubs in Chicago.
  • DET Starting Pitcher
Brant Hurter pitched decently in a losing effort against the Giants on Saturday, allowing three runs on four hits over his five innings of work.
The 25-year-old southpaw walked one and struck out five batters on the afternoon. He came on in the second inning after Alex Faedo worked as an opener for the Tigers and kept the Giants off the board completely until the fifth. There, Brett Wisely smacked a two-run double and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Heliot Ramos. Hurter got seven swings and misses on 76 pitches on the afternoon, posting a strong CSW of 39 percent. Expect him to take the hill in a bulk role again on Friday against the Yankees.
  • DET Starting Pitcher
Tigers selected the contract of LHP Brant Hurter.
Hurter is up to make his MLB debut against the Royals on Sunday, but it will be behind an opener; with the Tigers going with Alex Faedo in that role. Hurter still could qualify for a win, but asking him to do that against the Royals after registering a 5.80 ERA in Triple-A seems like a lot.
  • DET Starting Pitcher
Brant Hurer is expected to work behind an opener in his big-league debut against the Royals on Sunday.
The 25-year-old left-hander has really struggled at Triple-A Toledo this season, registering a 5.80, 1.47 WHIP and a 70/23 K/BB ratio over 71 1/3 innings of work. Given the departure of Jack Flaherty, the injury to Casey Mize and the struggles of Kenta Maeda though, the Tigers simply don’t have any better options to turn to at the moment.
  • DET Starting Pitcher
The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen reports Tigers pitching prospect Brant Hurter is likely to start Sunday against the Royals.
Hurter appears likely to start Sunday’s game against the Royals. He holds a lackluster 5.80 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 70/23 K/BB ratio across 71 1/3 innings (19 appearances, 18 starts) this season for Triple-A Toledo. The 25-year-old lefty isn’t a recommended option for fantasy managers.
