If the Astros and Cubs are really battling this out, it’s funny that they’re also reportedly trying to swing a Ryan Pressly trade that would seemingly help the Astros create some financial flexibility as they try to re-sign their All-Star. If the Cubs were to land Bregman, perhaps they could then trade Nico Hoerner, potentially for bullpen help and/or prospects.

The deal includes an invitation to spring training. It’s a return to the organization for Kolosvary after he played 27 games for Triple-A Worcester in 2024 with a .703 OPS. While he could spend time with the Red Sox, it’s more likely he is just a depth piece who helps work with the pitchers on the Woo Sox roster.

McShane was the Pirates’ 13th round pick in 2024. The 23-year-old right-hander will likely report to the lower levels after not making his professional debut last summer.

The two sides here couldn’t come to a deal before last week’s arbitration deadline, and Duran filed at $4 million, with the Red Sox coming in at $3.5 million. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal says they’ve now settled at the midpoint, $3.75 million for this year, while tacking on an $8 million option with a $100,000 buyout for Duran’s second year of arbitration eligibility.

Newcomb opened last season on the shelf with a knee injury, and after returning, he lasted just seven appearances, in which he gave up seven runs and eight walks in 10 innings, before being let go by the A’s. The 31-year-old has a career 4.51 ERA in 60 starts and 115 relief appearances at the big-league level. The Red Sox likely will have him compete for a bullpen spot.

Sandoval added that he started a throwing program “a couple weeks ago” and is “progressing well” in the lead up to spring training, which is just over three weeks away. The unexpected revelation dramatically alters Sandoval’s potential return timetable as the initial expectation after he signed with the Red Sox last month was that he wouldn’t be ready until the late stages of the 2025 campaign, even in a best-case scenario. The 28-year-old lefty should be ready to contribute at some point around midseason and represents an intriguing stash candidate for fantasy managers as the second half draws closer. With his signature changeup still a big-time weapon, Sandoval seems like a perfect fit for Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey’s approach, which places an emphasis on attacking primarily with off-speed pitches.

Soto was the headliner of the Red Sox 2025 international signing class, and it’s easy to see why considering he’s 6'3" and 185 pounds as a 16-year-old. The switch-hitter is graded out with a strong hit tool and plus raw power that scouts describe as “already average raw big league power.” Soto has good hands and solid footwork defensively, but he may have to move off of shortstop if he continues to fill out. The offensive upside is exciting here, even though he’s years away from the big leagues.

Shugart is removed from the 40-man roster after the Red Sox traded for Blake Sabol. Shugart picked up a save while making six appearances for Boston in 2024 while forging a 4.15 ERA, and he likely will see interest on the waiver wire or via trade from a team looking for pitching depth.

Sabol was designated for assignment by San Francisco after they signed Justin Verlander on Saturday. The 27-year-old backstop can handle things behind the plate, but also is capable of playing in the outfield. That versatility gives him a good chance to make Boston after spring training, but it’s far from a lock.

Stock has not pitched in the majors since 2021. The 35-year-old throws hard, but hasn’t been able to find success at the highest level thus far. He provides some depth at the Triple-A level for 2025..
