Morosi mentions that other teams are interested in Hernández, but the Red Sox and Orioles appear to be the biggest suitors, along with the Dodgers, who extended a qualifying offer to the 32-year-old after he hit 33 home runs for them this season. The Red Sox were also in on Hernández in free agency last year but the Dodgers offered him more money, so perhaps the Red Sox will decide to pony up this year.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #55
Martin has been stellar for the Red Sox in his two seasons, posting a 2.16 ERA in 100 appearances, while walking just 11 batters. “He’s earned the right to get here (to free agency) and we need to figure out how all the pieces come together but guys who can go months and months between walks (are valuable),” said Red Sox president of baseball operations Craig Breslow. With Kenley Jansen also a free agent, Martin would join a late-inning group of Kiam Hendriks and Garrett Whitlock, if he were to return.
  • FA Starting Pitcher #37
We’re not sure anyone had this on their radar. There’s usually a surprise or two and Pivetta is arguably the biggest one among this year’s group. The 31-year-old right hander continues to miss bats at a near-elite rate, but hasn’t exactly morphed into a fantasy ace in recent years. The Red Sox don’t exactly have a ton of pitching in the pipeline, so they’re clearly willing to pay up to retain one of their more reliable starters heading into 2025.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #31
This was just a procedural move as today was the deadline for the Red Sox to move them onto the 40-man roster. There’s a chance each pitcher will be healthy for the start of the 2025 season. Hendriks, Whitlock, and Campbell all figure to have a good chance to open the season in the bullpen, and Giolito has a chance to be in the rotation early in the season.
  • BOS Left Fielder #30
Refsnyder was a valuable bench option for the Red Sox in 2024. His primary role was against left-handed pitching where he hit .302 with eight home runs and 23 RBI in 126 at-bats; however, injuries forced him into more playing time overall, and the 33-year-old hit .283/.359/.471 in 93 games on the season with 11 home runs and 40 RBI. With the Red Sox having so many left-handed hitting outfielders, Refsnyder makes sense as a bench outfielder.
  • BOS Third Baseman #73
Westbrook finally broke through to the big leagues in his age-29 season with the Red Sox, slashing .150/.234/.350 with a pair of home runs and seven RBI in 48 plate appearances. He’s now free to explore the open market but will almost assuredly have to settle for a minor league contract with an invitation to big league camp.
  • BOS Third Baseman #29
The 29-year-old will get an opportunity to hit the open market for the first time. Dalbec appeared in 37 games for the Red Sox during the 2024 campaign, slashing just .133/.217/.193 with a homer, eight RBI and three stolen bases in 93 plate appearances. He’ll most likely have to settle for a minor league deal with a spring training invitation elsewhere, but stranger things have happened.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #54
This isn’t entirely surprising. Giolito missed all of the 2024 season after having internal brace surgery on his right elbow in March, so he would have been hard-pressed to find any team willing to offer him that much money in 2025. However, given how early he was hurt, he could be back on the mound for the Red Sox by April or May. An intriguing wrinkle is that the Red Sox would have a $14 million team option on Giolito for 2026 if he doesn’t pitch 140 innings next year. That could be added incentive for the Red Sox to bring him along slowly next year.
  • BOS Left Fielder #7
Yoshida was rumored to need the operation, and the 31-year-old outfielder underwent the successful operation shortly after the end of the season. Yoshida doesn’t have a timetable for a return, but it’s at least feasible that the operation will cause him to miss time to begin the season.
  • BOS General Manager #73
Last week, Breslow mentioned that the Red Sox would likely need to trade away a left-handed hitting outfielder or middle infielder this offseason due to a roster crunch, but it appears that any player could be traded for the right return. While that likely doesn’t include players like Rafael Devers or Brayan Bello, who signed long-term contracts this season, but other big names like Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, or Masataka Yoshida might be available if the Red Sox can get help for their rotation or bullpen, which Breslow admitted was a major priority this offseason.
