Pirates sent OF Billy McKinney outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.
McKinney was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Friday. The outfielder didn’t receive a claim on the waiver wire, so he sticks with the Pittsburgh organization.

Pirates designated OF Billy McKinney for assignment.
McKinney went 5-for-25 with a double and 13 strikeouts in 10 games for the Pirates. The 30-year-old is a quality Triple-A bat, but it’s never really translated.

Pirates selected the contract of 1B/OF Billy McKinney from Triple-A Indianapolis.
It’ll be the 2024 MLB debut for McKinney, who was hitting .295/.396/.450 in 40 games for Triple-A Indianapolis. Of course, hitting in Triple-A has never been any kind of problem for McKinney. Unfortunately, he’s come in at just .209/.284/.390 in 311 games over six major league seasons. The Pirates will give him some time against righties while Andrew McCutchen is out.

Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates plan to promote Billy McKinney from Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday.
No word yet on what the corresponding moves will be, but the Bucs will need to free up a spot on their 40-man roster as well as their active roster. The 29-year-old outfielder has performed well at the Triple-A level this season, slashing .298/.403/.460 with five homers and 18 RBI in 149 plate appearances across his 39 games. He’s unlikely to see enough playing time to make himself relevant from a fantasy perspective.

Billy McKinney hit a three-run homer and walked Tuesday in the Pirates’ 5-1 defeat of the Braves.
McKinney’s lone out was also well hit. He’s 8-for-22 with eight walks and just two strikeouts this spring. McKinney probably isn’t going to make the Pirates this spring, but he wouldn’t be a bad fit as a left-handed hitter behind two right-handed right fielders (Edward Olivares and Connor Joe) and a righty DH (Andrew McCutchen).

Pirates OF Billy McKinney and seven other players were invited to spring training.
McKinney was acquired in a trade with the Yankees in December after playing 48 games for New York this season. The 29-year-old has a career slash line of .209/.284/.390. The seven other players invited to major league spring training were INF Sergio Alcantara, OF Gilberto Celestino, RHP Ben Heller, INF/OF Jake Lamb, LHP Michael Plassmeyer, RHP Ryder Ryan, and RHP Hunter Stratton.

Pirates acquired OF Billy McKinney from the Yankees in exchange for international bonus pool money.
The Yankees had re-signed McKinney to a minor-league contract just last week but their plans have changed. McKinney has a career slash line of .209/.284/.390 and is not expected to be on the fantasy radar in 2024.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports the Pirates are acquiring outfielder Billy McKinney from the Yankees for international bonus pool money.
McKinney re-signed with the Yankees earlier this month on a minor league pact and is now on the move to Pittsburgh. The 29-year-old journeyman outfielder got into 48 games this past season for New York. He’s merely extra organizational depth at this stage of his career.

Yankees re-signed OF Billy McKinney to a minor league contract.
McKinney started 38 games for the Yankees last season, appearing in 48 games total, with the 7th and 8th slot being his most common spot in the batting order. He slashed a ho-hum .227/.320/.406 with all three categories landing above his career MLB averages. One notable area he excelled was against fly ball pitchers, sporting a 135 sOPS+ against that category of pitchers while his sOPS+ sat below 80 against all other pitchers.

Yankees sent OF Billy McKinney outright to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
McKinney is almost certain to elect free agency after being bumped from New York’s 40-man roster. The 29-year-old former first-round pick stuck around for 48 games this past season with the Yankees as extra corner outfield depth. He’ll likely wind up somewhere else this offseason on a minor league pact.
