Andy Sonnanstine pitched a three-hit shotout for Double-A Montgomery on Tuesday.
Sonnanstine improved to 4-6 with a 3.63 ERA, 82 H and 73/17 K/BB in 86 2/3 IP for the Biscuits. A mediocre fastball has held down Sonnanstine’s stock as a prospect, but he could be a future fourth or fifth starter for the Rays. A September callup is a possibility.

Cubs sent RHP Andy Sonnanstine outright to Triple-A Iowa.
The move clears him from the 40-man roster. Sonnanstine has given up eight runs on 13 hits over five innings this spring and will function as rotation depth in the minors.

    Cubs released RHP Andy Sonnanstine.
Sonnanstine refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Iowa and was granted his freedom. It doesn’t appear to be in the hurler’s best interest, as there are few organizations with an easier path to major league inning as the Cubs at this point. Sonnanstine gave up eight runs on 13 hits over five innings this spring. He’ll receive a minor league pact elsewhere, but has no chance at a big league job out of the gate.

Andy Sonnanstine allowed five runs in two innings of relief against the White Sox on Sunday.
He was officially credited with a blown save. Sonnanstine signed a non-guarnteed contract with the Cubs this offseason and will have to improve on his numbers if he plans to make their Opening Day roster.

    Rays non-tendered RHP Andy Sonnanstine.
Sonnanstine was arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter. The 28-year-old right-hander earned $912,500 in 2011 while posting an ugly 5.55 ERA and 12/12 K/BB ratio over 35 2/3 innings at the major-league level. Some team may give him a chance to start again, but he’ll likely have to settle for a minor league deal this offseason.

    Cubs signed RHP Andy Sonnanstine.
Terms aren’t yet known, but it’s a non-guaranteed split contract. Sonnanstine, 28, was non-tendered by the Rays in December after posting an ugly 5.55 ERA and 12/12 K/BB ratio over 35 2/3 innings at the major-league level this past season. The soft-tossing right-hander will serve as insurance for the bullpen and starting rotation.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that J.P. Howell and Andy Sonnanstine are candidates to be non-tendered by the Rays.
Howell’s first season back from shoulder surgery didn’t go well, as he held an ugly 6.16 ERA over 46 games. He did at least keep left-handed batters to a .222 mark, and he was fantastic in 2008 and 2009 before the shoulder problems surfaced. While Tampa might not be willing to pay what he’ll make in his final year of arbitration, there will be teams out there willing to give him a chance to rebound. Sonnanstine spent a good chunk of 2011 at Triple-A and will likely make around $1 million in arbitration. It’s a modest figure but one the Rays don’t find enticing.

Andy Sonnanstine pitched better Friday but was still tagged with his second straight loss to slip to a losing record.
In seven innings, he gave up 10 hits and four runs -- certainly nothing to make owners rush out and pick him up, but perhaps good enough to buy him more time in the rotation. Sonnanstine struck out one, walked one, and gave up just one home run after yielding five in his last two starts. Baby steps.

According to the St. Petersburg Times, the Devil Rays may call up Andy Sonnanstine from Triple-A to start Tuesday against the Blue Jays.
He would replace either Jae Seo or Casey Fossum in the rotation, and the Devil Rays may also call up J.P. Howell to grab a starting spot. An extreme control pitcher with outstanding minor league numbers, Sonnanstine is like a slightly poorer man’s Kevin Slowey and could good value in AL-only leagues eventually.

Andy Sonnanstine was hit hard for seven runs in just 3 2/3 innings against the Orioles on Sunday.
Sonnanstine gave up eight hits, three of which went for extra bases, and walked two in the abbreviated outing. The right-hander has an impressive 54/15 K/BB ratio in 75 innings since joining the Devil Rays, but that he’s hit hard when in the strike zone has limited his value considerably. With his ERA now over 6.00, the Devil Rays could look at other options.
