Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Nationals have agreed to a one-year, $6 million contract with free agent slugger Josh Bell.
It feels like a nice bargain for the Nationals, who add a legitimate middle-of-the-order slugger to a lineup that desperately needed another one. The two sides are very familiar with each other as Bell spent the 2021 season and the first half of the 2022 campaign with the Nationals before being dealt to the Padres at the deadline. He had a bit of a down season in 2024 and still slashed a respectable .249/.319/.405 with 19 homers and 71 RBI in 145 contests between the Marlins and Diamondbacks. It’ll be interesting to see who gets squeezed out of playing time, as the Nationals already brought in Nathaniel Lowe to be their regular first baseman, so the assumption is that Bell with function as their primary designated hitter. That’s definitely bad news for Juan Yepez and Andres Chaparro.
  • WAS First Baseman #19
Nationals placed 1B Andrés Chaparro on the paternity list.
Chaparro will miss up to three days. The Nationals could use Juan Yepez at first base and the newly recalled Stone Garrett at DH tonight.

Andres Chaparro drove in three runs including a two-run homer in a comeback win over the Pirates on Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader.
Chaparro tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh with a two-run blast off of Ryan Borucki. The infielder drove in a run earlier in the contest with a single off Mitch Keller, and he’s driven in 13 runs in just 22 games with the Nationals. Chaparro was not considered a top prospect coming into the year, but he’s played well enough that he could be considered for a spot on the Nationals to open the 2025 campaign.

Andrés Chaparro went 1-for-4 with a solo home run against the Cubs on Saturday.
Chaparro led off the fourth inning with a solo blast off Javier Assad, his second of the season over his first 16 major league games after hitting 23 in the minors. The 25-year-old slugger is slashing .268/.328/.500 across 61 plate appearances. With seven doubles, nine of his 15 hits have gone for extra bases while he’s struck out at just a 16.4 percent rate.
  • WAS Third Baseman #19
Andrés Chaparro slugged his first major league home run on Tuesday in a win over the Yankees.
Chaparro signed with the Yankees as an international free agent back in 2015 and spent the next eight years in their system before finally ascending to the majors earlier this month with the Nationals.
  • WAS Center Fielder #3
Dylan Crews is starting in right field and batting second in his MLB debut.
With the Yankees starting a left-handed pitcher, Crews will hit second with James Wood sliding down to first. The Nationals will also move Joey Gallo to the bench and put Andres Chaparro in at first base; however, it’s unclear how this lineup will shake out against right-handed pitchers.
  • WAS Third Baseman #19
Andrés Chaparro doubled in the Nationals’ only two runs Friday in the loss to the Braves.
The revelation that Dylan Crews is joining the Nationals on Monday suggests that either Chaparro or Juan Yepez will be sent down for at least 15 days. We don’t really see the point; both have done well enough to justify their roster spots and Crews could be promoted Sept. 1 without having to demote anyone else. But it seems like the decision has been made. Chaparro is more interesting than Yepez for the long haul, so hopefully he gets to stick.
  • WAS Third Baseman #19
Andrés Chaparro is not in the starting lineup for the Nationals on Thursday.
The 25-year-old has played pretty much every day at either first base or DH since he was recalled by the Nationals last week. In his eight games, he’s gone 8-for-29 (.276) with four doubles, four runs scored, one RBI, and a 3:3 K:BB ratio. That seems good enough for the Nationals to continue giving him a chance to prove his merit to remain on the active roster for 2025, so this may just be a routine day off. Juan Yepez will start at DH and hit seventh in Chaparro’s place.
  • WAS Third Baseman
Andrés Chaparro went 3-for-4 with three doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored in a win over the Orioles on Tuesday.
That’s quite a debut for the 25-year-old who spent eight seasons in the minors working towards this moment. While it’s a great performance from a human interest standpoint, it’s also worth taking note of in fantasy leagues as well. Chaparro got the start at first base on Tuesday and hit .328 with a .977 OPS and 23 homers in Triple-A this season, so there is some juice in his bat and he’s likely going to get plenty of chances to show it off at the big league level. He’s worth a look in deeper formats right now.
  • WAS Third Baseman
Nationals selected the contract of INF Andrés Chaparro from Triple-A Rochester.
Chaparro has put up big numbers in Triple-A this year with a .328 average, .977 OPS and 23 homers, and the 25-year-old will now have a chance to show if he can have that translate to MLB success. With the Nationals out of contention he should be given a chance, but there’s reason to doubt he carries over these numbers to the highest level.
